ParticipantI’m not sure what your specific knee issues are, but I have real problems with my IT band. There are a LOT of IT band stretch exercises that I do, but the one that works the best is this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoHBDim_fzkIt has solved all my IT band problems. So, I don’t have much to add other than really focus on stretching in addition to strengthening. I think that’s just as important to protect the knee (or any body part).

ParticipantUgh, I ’bout died today (metaphorically speaking). I should’ve bailed out and snagged the metro home once it hit 7, but I pushed through. Now I’m going to be paying for it! I’m definitely not quite in shape enough to ride both ways every day yet (especially 2 days after a spinal procedure).

ParticipantI don’t remember which year it was, but Cycle Across Maryland was in Southern Maryland one year, and it poured. Every. Damn. Day. I was a teen-challenge mentor, and our tent city was just flooded. There was nothing you could do but take a lot of extra time in the restroom so you had, at least, a few minutes of not being rained on.

ParticipantThanks, Pete. Honestly, I’m not “part of the choir” yet, but seeing so many people (and you, primarily) commute on a regular basis, regardless of weather, pulling SO many miles, has inspired at least 1 person to go for it. Me. I hope to see you out on the roads or trails one day, or maybe at a meet-up so I can buy you a beer.
For my part, I’ve raised a few eyebrows at work. One other, at least, has been inspired to also buy a bike and commute (occasionally) on it. Trickle down.

Well, I spent almost $200 on two sets of studded tires for last winter. Used them exactly never.
good thing winter comes around every year! (well, except last year, right…)

30% chance of rain today. Best not to risk it; recommend taking the bus  [getting the bike bag ready]
I purposely strayed from my previous routine (driving my car down the day before, Metro home, bike in the next day, drive home with bike) today. I spent $120 on a bontrager rain shell, and going to see if it was worth it today. Of course, I didn’t pick up booties or a helmet cover, so I’m kind of screwed LOL

I swear I do not do a Flintstone stop so I don’t think I’m dragging them on the ground at all.
Do any of you have experience with this? What do you do to preserve the life of road bike cleats?
Thanks.

Liz,
Thank you, so much, for the visual this morning! LOL My question is what’s the best way to clean coffee off my monitor and keyboard?
I have SPD-SL (same things basically) also with a stiff road shoe. I haven’t had them all that long, but have also noticed wear on mine. So I looked in to this a little bit. First, they can wear pretty far down before they have to be replaced. You don’t need to worry about it until the color portion is completely worn through, or if the clipping in/out isn’t as smooth. I do flintstone stops, walk around in my shoes, and am always stopping for red lights, stop signs, etc. So I’m always clipping in/out. I haven’t worn down mine far enough to replace, even though they look pretty ragged. So, just check the color indicators to see how far down that is. Maybe not as far as you think.
When it does come time to replace, definitely look around for prices. I know for the SPD-SL cleats, I’ve seen prices anywhere from $20 to $30, so a pretty large difference depending on where you buy them.
Here’s a picture of a worn cleat

one suggestion I saw to lengthen the life of the cleats is, rather than walking, scoot around on your butt

ParticipantI have 615 points, and should be logging many more (hopefully) soon as I start commuting on a more regular basis. I’m still team-less if anyone needs another member

I’d seen the other two getting love and wondered if this one was next. Interestingly this is being done by a different crew than worked on the other two.
It seems like they cabooses are sponsored (managed? cared for?) by different entities. I don’t know anything about them, but found a few different bits of information when googling
• The CabooseIn 1989, longtime Society member and railroad aficianado George Moore located a surplus Norfolk and Western caboose, arranged for it to be transported to Herndon, and coordinated with the Herndon Department of Public Works to install the section of track on which it sits. Located adjacent to the W&OD trail—formerly the W&OD railroad line—the caboose serves as a reminder of the town’s rail history. Although the caboose is now the property of the Town of Herndon the Society continues to monitor its condition and to fund the interior maintenance. Following his death in 2003, the caboose was dedicated in George’s memory. In 2008, the interior was restored and the windows were improved to make them water tight.
The one in Vienna seems to be cared for by the Optimist Club of Greater Vienna.

Hahaha…. I guess that has me firmly planted in limbo. I love steel, ti, aluminum, scandium, carbon and bamboo. I’ve ridden and enjoyed them all. I currently own each except for bamboo. I need to fix that.
Damn you, Dirt! I was going through your Flickr shots and saw the bamboo frame…. now I can’t get it out of my mind that I need one. I’m bamboozled!

ParticipantIt also didn’t seem to include any information from outside sources, people like (for example) the riders here. I’m coming from the same perspective, BTWD inspired me to tackle the 21m commute more often. So far I’ve managed to cut my time down to very close what it takes me on Metro (red to green lines). I’m learning a TON of information from the people here on every aspect of what I need to be better prepared to make this more than just a once-a-year isn’t-this-cool idea.
