Larry definitely knew that the forum knew about the San Fran stuff.

No one on the Washington Area Bike Forum or among the riders I spoke with had heard of such incidents around here, though one Strava user did admit to blowing through a red light at 2 a.m. in an attempt to better his segment time — only to be greeted by a police officer on a bike on the other side of the intersection, who let him go.

While he, technically I guess, could have said “had heard of such incidents occurring around here”, I didn’t feel it was all that ambiguous either.

edit: oh, and I want to publically apologize to my team for not getting a ride in yesterday. My typical evening 1.1 mile ride was unpossible due to a conference call that lasted until just after midnight. On the upside, having worked a 16 hour day, I only need to work an hour or two on Friday which will make it possible to put in some serious (for me) mileage that day.

With only one or two exceptions, I’ve been doing some kind of really long route in or home every day. I think the most I’ve stretched it is about 20 miles. It should be about 2.5 door-to-door.

You should’ve dropped in for a beer! I live in Bethesda.

What are the responsibilities in a situation like this? Was he justified in giving the FODoom?

I think everyone has a responsibility to try and be a P.A.L. (predictable, alert, lawful) no matter what vehicle you’re utilizing. I’m not going to get in to whether you or he were in any sort of right or wrong. I just want to say that, from my point of view when I’m on a bike, EVERYONE is out to kill me.

After reading this topic and thinking about the fact that I don’t carry any information to assist if something happened, I logged on to RoadID.com and bought one.

Although I’d heard about the injury, I didn’t see this thread until just now. Glad you’re feeling better, Rod! Now stop chasing all the women around corners, that should keep you with all wheels firmly on the ground 😎

The battle for the top spot is sure HOT! And it looks like team 9 is busting more than just bollards!

Sadly, it appears that Crit My Pant’s streak of perfect attendance will end as KayakCyndi has some business related thingy that will keep her off the bike (don’t want to violate her privacy or security by disclosing what it is, the rumors are that she’s a super secret government agent going on a clandestine mission to ensure world peace). That’s not to make excuses why team Crit will slip out of the lead, especially since my wimpy and sickly body keeps slapping snooze in the morning and I’m definitely not pulling my weight on this challenge, but whatever.

My Garmin mounted quite easily to this, but I did lose GPS signal on the train. I’ll have to manually edit the ride. This is allowed, right?

And Team V takes the –very temporary, I’m sure– lead!

So one thing that I’m noticing is that the 10-points-per day mechanism will certainly benefit larger teams disproportionately. Crit-my-pants has more miles than we do (607 to 561, @9AM jan 8) but the fact that they are a 4-person team means they wont get the extra bump from the 10-point-per-day that a 5-person team would for the extra rider.

I’m not saying we should be changing this: rcannon has already put in *a lot* of work to get us to the great shape we’re in now – but perhaps at the end of the competition we should think of how to award the smaller teams who still managed to compete despite the 10-point-extra-rider handicap.

Looking at that you’re seeing now shows that 3 of your team already have the 10 points for day 8, that’s 30 points up. None of our team members have day 8 rides posted yet, so just that alone will put us back in to the top. I’m not saying that to brag, I’m trying to illustrate something…. which I hope I eventually get around to doing before you stop reading…..

Team 10 has jumped in to the lead only because we’ve all motivated each other to ride more than, I think, we normally would. If you look back to my Nov-Dec miles, you’ll see that I was no where near riding every single day. So we’ve far exceeded what is our normal “handicap” numbers by far. Unfortunately (for us), that’s about to come to a grinding halt. 2 of our 4 members will be taking some days off, so there goes 1/2 of our daily 40 possible just for riding. While that would normally be a disadvantage, the work horse of the team, Rod, will continue to post his huge courier mileage, and I’ll continue to keep putting up at least a 1 mile ride. I think this is the equalization that will bring the handicap numbers back to reality. The first week was fresh, exciting, motivating. We’ve also had incredibly good weather. As things return to “normal” for all of the team’s riding habits, the points should put us all back in line with each other (and our true handicap numbers), making things a lot closer.

I just hope people don’t over analyze things and try to second guess the handicaps. Everyone was just doing their normal things when the handicaps were taken from. People aren’t so much doing their normal things now, so to try and adjust based on what people are doing now would be wrong. You can’t account for motivation and competitiveness, that’s what puts the leaders in the lead (right Crit My Pants? go team 10!! LOL)
