Thanks for your concern and advice guys, everything has been documented, I will contact the insurance company after I’m done seeing doctors. (it was not a taxi btw).
BMC, there’s no harm, and as a matter of fact I’d call the insurance company asap to get the claims process rolling. Just don’t release the medical portion of the claim until you know you’re all well. Opening the claim early is in your benefit. That way the insurance company can assign the necessary folks to follow up.
That way your bike repairs can be out of the way and you only have to worry about getting better.

Given this guys negligence and the police report that details the driver’s fault (and one witness I have to go along with this) do you know if the driver’s insurance company will cover my medical costs, missed time at work, not to mention the destruction of my bike? Or should I consult an attorney to contact the driver’s insurance on my behalf? I’m a foreign national, not sure how things work here, and just wont to approach this the right way and get a fair hearing. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
If the driver was cited at fault then his insurance should reimburse you in full. Doesn’t matter if you’re a foreign national or not.
I would contact his insurance carrier directly, and if you get no satisfaction there, then consult an attorney. Reason I say that is once an attorney contacts an insurance carrier on your behalf then the carrier will not speak to you. I will say document, document document EVERYTHING related to the accident. Meticulous recordkeeping is your friend.
Given your screen name, was the bike a BMC? I have two… love them. Tell the insurance company you want an new Impec
You are entitled to full reimbursement of all losses. DO NOT sign off on any medical releases until you know you are 100%. Medical and physical (bike, lost wages, etc) can be settled separately.CCrew

Now I have TWO bikes
d00d.. Rule 12…
Rule #12 / The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
While the minimum number of bikes one should own is three, the correct number is n+1, where n is the number of bikes currently owned. This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of bikes owned that would result in separation from your partner.CCrew

@CCrew; great point. Overall sustainability needs to be considered.
Yeah, it’s a bigger factor than a lot of people actually realize. It’s really easy to tout green technology, hard to actually truly practice it.
In the end though an eBike I’m certain has less of an impact on the environment than an automobile, so there’s a big plus in it’s favor. Thing is that when you compare it to a regular bike that gain goes away rather quickly, so it’s a tradeoff like anything else. When that battery dies like all will, it’s yet another demerit in the green food chain as to the disposal impact.

Participant10 stories up it’d probably hit terminal velocity, which give or take a bit is 120mph. So Jsnyd’s pretty much spot on for potential damage. regardless, it would certainly screw up your day. Sounds to me like you followed it up well.

From a purely “green” standpoint, I’m fascinated by the potential of eBikes to expand the number of people ditching their cars (at least part of the time), saving fuel and getting some exercise as well. (I’m told that, despite the electric power, there is a natural tendency to pedal, even when you don’t have to.) I hadn’t given any thought to the trails issue, and given the already-contentious relationship between different classes of trail user (bikes vs. peds), I can appreciate the concern for the PR (and real danger) issues that eBikes might represent.
I think that before you embrace the “green” factor of an eBike you really should do some research into the gaping hole in the ecosystem caused by the battery technology. It’s something that the Prius lovers of the world like to conveniently forget, but the mining damage that occurs to support battery technologies is far larger than that used to support the steel and oil to power old school autos. If you really want green, pedal. If you don’t want to see steel mine damage , buy a bamboo bike and pedal that.

Last year I saw a police car on Four Mile Run Trail. The officer wasn’t chasing anyone. He (or was it a she? – don’t remember) appeared to look lost. He drove along the trail for quite a distance.
Oh, I see that all the time. Herndon, Fairfax and Vienna most often. I’ve gotten hassled now I think 5 times for being on the W&OD in the wee hours of the morning. Technically it’s closed from dusk to dawn as are many others.
Fairfax these days is so used to seeing me they wave and say good morning. Vienna is getting better but I still have to break the new guys in.. Herndon generally needs an attitude adjustment. I’ve never had a bad dealing with the Arlington PD, see their motorcycle cops on the trails a lot.
