ParticipantAccording to a WashCycle article on the King Street bike lanes, comments “have been heavily against the bike lanes.”
The Coalition for Smarter Growth has created a link to allow you to easily send feedback to the Alexandria City Council and Board supporting the bike lanes on King Street.

I too tried to ride up the path. Probably, the easiest way to go with your bike is to use the bike ramp.

ParticipantIn reading through the board report, it does not appear that there will be much improvement to the biking infrastructure as a result of this new development. The only reference to bicycles in the document are on page 29, where the developer (Simon) is required to provide bicycle storage facilities.
65.
Bicycle Storage Facilities
The Developer agrees to provide twelve (12) bicycle spaces near the front entrance of the portion of the site to be improved with an approximately 51,000 square foot addition as depicted in the plans dated October 21, 2013.
The Developer agrees to obtain approval from the County Manager of the spaces as meeting the standards in this condition, as part of the final landscape plan, prior to issuance of the Final Building Permit for the portion of the site to be improved with an approximately 51,000 square foot addition as depicted in the plans dated October 21, 2013. The Developer agrees that the location, design and details of facilities for visitor bicycle parking spaces must meet the following standards.
a.
The facilities shall be installed at exterior locations that are highly visible to and within 50 feet of the primary building entrances, unless there are
physical obstructions that cannot be changed or moved to accommodate the bicycle parking within the 50 foot distance, in which case they shall be sited as close to the 50 foot distance as physically possible.
b.
The facilities shall not encroach on any area in the public right-of-way intended for use by pedestrians or any required fire egress.
c.
Any bicycle parking racks used on the site must conform to the Arlington County Bicycle Parking Standards, or be approved by the County
Manager as substantially equal to a rack shown in the standards.Currently, where Simon is planning to build the new addition, there are two sets of bike racks that provide semi-covered bike parking for around 20 bikes. Additionally, the current bike parking is in view of the security guard posted in the office lobby.

Simon could make a big statement for biking to their mall by adding secured bike parking in their parking garage. They could probably turn a profit, as there are likely store and office employees willing to pay for secured parking, as well as cyclists who would come to the mall to shop.

Army Navy Dr Cycle Track
Project will consist of a “road diet” on the existing travel lanes on Army Navy Drive, including removal of the median, to provide room for a two-way dedicated bicycling facility on the south side of the ROW, alongside the existing sidewalk. Will also include driveway apron and traffic signalization modifications.

ParticipantWell according to the advisory, Fairfax was on site making repairs to the collapsed sewer line. The last report from the county was on October 15. I am not sure what you expected the city to do, perhaps ask the residents of Lake Barcroft to open their dam and let the waters flush the sewage spill?
Regarding plans for Holmes Run trail, the city does have a proposed project in the works to update the trail. According to an article posted by WashCycle on February 17, 2013, work is scheduled to begin mid to late 2014. However, I don’t recall seeing any further updates on this project.

But I thought Alexandria was a silver level bicycling friendly city. Fail.
I am not sure this is a failure of the city. The stream does run through Alexandria, however, the problem originated in Fairfax County – collapsed sewer line.

Indeed they did begin the paving.

While the lumber posts on the right side would seem to be supports for stairs, they seem to encroach on the hairpin turns. Puzzling. Guess I’ll have to stay tuned.
I spoke to one of the workers this morning, he said there are actually multiple sets of steps. The posts are the top of the steps and the ramp will serve as the landing for each set of steps. They are hoping to be finished with the installation by the end of next week.

The pavement on Long Bridge and Boundary Channel isn’t great, but isn’t worse than the “bad” roads in Arlington. Kidical Mass Arlington has been on some of those “bad” roads, and I don’t think they’re a big deal. We’re rolling along slowly, and I’ll be sure to warn people to look out for potholes and such.
Thoughts?
Saw signs this morning that Boundary Channel is scheduled to be closed this weekend (Friday, September 20 9 pm – Monday, September 23 5 am), but based on your map, you might be avoiding the section that is going to be closed.
What if you went south in Crystal City and entered Alexandria using Potomac Avenue or is this strictly an Arlington County ride?

ParticipantWhen I rode by this morning, they were laying gravel down on the new bike path. Earth moving equipment is still on the bridge removing the layers of dirt.
