Participant1/10/2022 Thorn (I was shocked I was able to stumble over this, especially in an area I don’t usually ride)

Here is a list of your findings for my possible group ride in Fairfax. Many thanks!
Serdar, interesting concept. Because of some of the major roads in this area, this area is not the easiest to get around, but I’ll give some thought to a potential ride in this area. One place I am really looking forward to checking out is a bakery/grocery store featuring products from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, and Russia. From reading the reviews, it sounds like a fantastic place and would make for an interesting “field trip” in the area.

ParticipantThis LFL is located at the end of Mirror Pond Drive in Fairfax. The gentleman pictured with the LFL is also playing Freezing Saddles AND is the Steward for this particular LFL. It is nicely organized with a good selection of adult books on the top shelf and children’s books on the bottom shelf. While we were there, Eric took the time to tidy-up the books in the library. Talking with him I learned about the process he went through to obtain approval and payment for his LFL. It definitely gave me a new appreciation of the LFLs seen in the neighborhoods. My hat is off to all Stewards of these libraries, both in setting them up and maintaining them.

ParticipantThis Japanese restaurant, Samurai, is located in the University Mall Shopping Center in Fairfax. Not only is this game giving me a greater awareness of all the contributions to our society and social fabric made by immigrants, but it is providing incentive for adding miles to my routes to take pictures of the places. Thank you, Serdar. (I have a couple of places I am looking forward to checking out in the future days and weeks.)

ParticipantLong Branch Stream in Long Branch Stream Valley Park in Fairfax. There is a nice pedestrian bridge that crosses this stream to connect two neighborhoods. This bridge is a great way for pedestrians and bikes to avoid Olley Lane and Burke Station Road (both busy secondary roads).

ParticipantA statue of George Mason on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University. There are a number of quotes around the base of the statue including one from the VA Declaration of Rights. The Virginia Declaration of Rights, which Mason principally authored, served as a basis for the United States Bill of Rights, a document of which he has been deemed a father. Mason prepared the first draft of the Virginia Declaration of Rights in 1776, and his words formed much of the text adopted by the final Revolutionary Virginia Convention. He also wrote a constitution for the state.

ParticipantThis LFL is located on Beaumont Street in Fairfax. It looks like a repurposed “free newspaper” box that has been lovingly painted and filled with books. Lots of children’s books. Could use some tidying up and some adult books.

Most houses here have a cuboid of this type on top. In the desert, a “swamp cooler” is a far more efficient way to cool one’s home in the summer. Not sexy, not scenic, but definitely essential!

I always learn such interesting information during Freezing Saddles. I had never heard of a “swamp cooler”. I had to do a web search to learn about it.

ParticipantWhat neighborhood doesn’t have a good Pho Restaurant. Pho Bytes is located in Fairfax Centre on Lee Highway in Fairfax. I have eaten there multiple times with my daughters and this was where I was introduced to Boba Tea. They no longer offer Boba Tea but that tea can be found a few doors down at Sharetea.

ParticipantThis marker memorializes the Rosenwald School that had been erected at this corner (George Mason Blvd and School Street) now a little park, in Fairfax City. In 1917, Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears, Roebuck & Co., formed the Julius Rosenwald Fund, a philanthropic foundation that funded construction of over 5,000 schools for African-Americans across the rural south between 1917 and 1932. The Fairfax Rosenwald School or “Fairfax Colored School” was constructed in 1925–26 on this site. It replaced an earlier African-American school on Main Street east of the Fairfax Cemetery. The Fairfax Rosenwald School was one of four such schools built in Fairfax County. It was demolished in 1951 and replaced by Eleven Oaks School.

ParticipantThis LFL on Farm House Lane in Fairfax is in very sad shape. It is in need of a new librarian and some books. It is a little out of the way of my neighborhood to take on that project.

ParticipantI read about this restaurant in my “Nextdoor” feed this morning. Since I was going to be in that area today, I figured I would check them out. They serve chicken with Latin American or Mediterranean seasonings. It has a lot of good reviews. I’ll have to check this out for dinner some time. It is located in the Turnpike Shopping Center on Pickett Road in Fairfax.
