I was going to just describe in detail what happened, but then I realized I had my helmet camera. Both happened on the W&OD around Brandymore Castle.

Missed connection #1: Near crash due to a cyclist double-passing a jogger right in front of an oncoming cyclist who was coming down a hill
Missed connection #2: A cyclist calling his pass with, “Risk-averse cyclist on the left!” that I couldn’t help but laugh at.

I’ll note: that hill always invites (demands?) a bit of sprinting, but the sight lines aren’t very good… :/

Yah, hope you’re okay! Like KLizotte said, pedals screw in in such a way that they should self-tighten as you pedal, so it’s possible you reversed them…or maybe the threads got messed up when you changed them. Also, it’s really important to grease the threads so they don’t seize up in the crankarms (which is basically why you had such a hard time removing your old pedals). If you didn’t do that, I suggest going back and doing it ASAP.

Riding the towpath past mile 25 or so, I had a pedal come off the…pedal spindle once, no crash though.

They’re not particularly field repairable. So, I slipped it back on, clipped in and rode gently, having to push it back on the spindle every half mile or so, until I got to Leesburg and bough some new pedals. I’d been looking into upgrading the Forte “campus” pedals to the Shimano “campus” pedals anyway… :)

The first time I got buzzed by an aircraft landing on that runway, while I was riding on the MtV trail, I nearly had a heart attack.

Where’d THAT come from? There’s an east/west runway???

    :)

Maybe someone can tell me otherwise, but I don’t think anything special is gained by a spammer by posting messages on the forum? I wonder if some foreigners use forum boards to practice their English?

It’s possible a spammer can go back and make edits to previous posts, perhaps spamming, perhaps gaming google/bing/whatever search results…

    It’s worrisome, but…

…the van driver did, in fact, pull over. And a conversation was had. Hell, I’m calling that a win.

I’m sure it’s possible to find a sweet spot somewhere between zero and 10 beers the night before a ride.

Sometimes (appreciate you’re lucky if it’s rarely) beer also has the n+1 problem.

I’ve always wanted a saddle that worked a bit like a luxury car seat, with soft-touch angle and distance adjustments available during the ride. Might make the bike a bit heavier, though… :)

Just curious how it can heal without pins since it is completely detached. Amazing how bones heal.

Yeah, on a mid-shaft facture ,the muscles/ligaments plus the weight of the arm pull the two broken ends apart. If everything goes well, a large mass called a callus forms in-between and around the bone ends and calcifies enough over a few months to be almost as strong as the original bone. Over a period of one to two years post-injury it further calcifies and reorganized into a zig-zag of normal bone.

And that’s why you end up with a permanent bump. Unless you get surgery, then you can trade a bump for a scar and a patch of numb skin. :) In either case, I just call it my bike tattoo…

Yeah I had to look up the street names when making the post.

If you’d said Lee Highway…ok, I guess on that side of 66 it’s no longer called that… :)

Holy Crap Brendan that sounds horrible. I hope you are feeling better. I would suggest still seeing your physician and getting checked out to make sure it was nothing other than dehydration, although your symptoms sound pretty consistent with that.

Thanks. I hope so. I’m in a bit of shock about it and hoping it was primarily dehydration, but I’m also worried. I’m planning to call my doc during call-in hours (8-8:30) tomorrow.

    The good news:
    – My fist bike to work day! When I started biking, I worked from home full time, then I got laid off, then I took a nearly two year vacation from work.
    – My office is in Reston, so it’s a good workout.
    – It was a beautiful morning! :)
    – All the BTWD stops were pretty awesome looking: Fairfax, Merrifield(!), Vienna.
    – I’m working from home today, so I decided to bike to work, then bike back home to work, doubling my ride length!

    The not-so-good news:
    – Didn’t sleep well at all, and got a late start.
    – Dragged the whole way from Clarendon to Reston Town Center. I rode the same route (sans the last 1.5 miles or so) Saturday without a problem. WTH?
    – Because I registered at Reston, I didn’t stop at any of the fine stops I noted along the way, now I regret that.
    – Due to the late start and seriously dragging the whole way, I got there at 9:10am, 10 minutes after closing with most tents and tables put away and no BTWD people to be found, so I refilled my water/gatorade bottles and headed back.

    The bad news:
    – The dragging continued and got particularly bad as I got east of East Falls Church Metro.
    – By ballston, I could barely pedal and just wanted to pull over and lie down. At every intersection. Never had that happen before, it was seriously weird.
    – When I got off of the bike to lock it up in front of my place, I started to pass out. The whole world started fading away and I just sat down on the side walk because it seemed the smart thing to do.
    – It took me about 5 minutes to slowly get my bike put away and take my bag off the bike, necessitating leaning over and sitting several times.
    – The problem continued inside, where I was comfortable lying (on the floor) but standing or sitting was a problem.
    – Out of concern, I took my pulse and it was chaotic.
    – Took about two hours before I could stand up from sitting without a problem.
    – I still feel pretty beat (though that could be mostly the sleep deprivation… I hope).

Not sure what all that was about. Dehydration and sleep-deprivation can trigger arrhythmia. I had something similar before during/after a long ride in 99 degree high humidity conditions, dehydration related, a couple of years ago.

I’ll chalk that up to too much too fast after so many many months off the bike for surgical recovery, combined with external factors such as very little sleep and dehydration.

    For now?

Was our favorite cop really celebrating BTWD by handing out stop sign tickets at the crosswalk of a low speed, low volume street which was closed for the Bikenetic BTWD station? I’d like to hope that I just misread that interaction.

Who was the friendly cyclist who gave me the warning that police were at the fairfax BTWD stop?
The cone slalom course they put on the trail/street right there *was* tempting, though.
