I’m going to write this once. It is hard to type.
Monday morning I was riding along N Street in Georgetown on my fixie…. road with cars parked on both sides. A car came around me to pass, but misjudged how fast i was going. They swerved back to the right side of the road to avoid an oncoming car. Unfortunately they had not cleared completely past me. It happened very quickly… I got crowded into a storm drain. the handlebars twisted quickly to the right and I crashed on my right side. The driver didn’t stop. I didn’t get a plate number.
Police came quickly and I gave my report. 2 things make it so nothing will come of this: 1) I didn’t get a plate number; and b) the car didn’t make contact with me.
End result: The bars twisting broke a bone in my wrist before I hit the ground. I’ve got a few bruises and scrapes. I get more info on the wrist tomorrow when I meet my orthopedist.
I’m completely off the bike. Luckily I’ve got a recumbent trike. See you on the trails!
Thanks, y’all.
Heal up quickly friend.

My morning commute was possibly the last, or at least next-to-last, by bike until, oh, April-ish.
Just when I’m starting to get good at them!
(just not quite good enough for dodging potholes + cars in the dark)
Wow, and I thought my forced time off the bike for the next 6 weeks was bad… April?? Unless you’re going to be on a submarine, there has *got* to be some way you could keep biking over the next few months, right?

ParticipantI drove down it yesterday afternoon at about 5PM and there was a fresh layer of asphalt on the eastern edge of the road (left side of the image above with the dumptruck)

Good thing you weren’t riding geared – the injury might have been multiplied.
Yeah, 48 x 17 is enough! Imagine the injury level if I had been on a 52X26….OVER 9000!
[bonus points for obscure-ish internet reference?]

Whew, had to look that one up and ouch, that doesn’t sound good. Rest, relax and hope you feel better soon.
LizYeah – the good ole’ hip socket. I wonder if the injury is due in part to the mechanics of riding fixed-gear. I can’t recall exactly where my pedal stroke was when I went down, but the upward force of the pedal on my leg may have been part of the cause. The fracture is on the socket, where the femur sits – upward force may have been enough pressure to fracture. Kind of like cracking a mortar with a pestle…if that analogy makes any sense.
Then again, I’m no expert on biomechanics.

ParticipantGlad to hear you’re doing alright!
I didn’t get off quite as easy. Fractured Acetabular means at least a month of recovery for me.
On the bright side, this will make waiting to make my next bike purchase until 2014 models come out and 2013 prices drop a bit easier! Test rides will have to wait.

Way to hyjack the post Bilsko, no one is asking how FFX Hinterlands is doing. We all just want a chance to ride your bike.
I know – I felt bad cause FFX is probably just as sore as me this morning!

I’ll be happy to ghost ride your bike home this afternoon.
It doesn’t hurt to ride, it just hurts to walk.

Oh no! Is the bike okay??
Bike appears to be fine – I think I’m the one who absorbed the shock of the fall. Right leg is pretty sore, but I can move everything well enough so I’m pretty confident nothing is broken. But it does hurt quite a bit to put weight on it, so I’m probably going to have to spend a couple days mending. More time to look at the pictures coming out of Eurobike, right?

ParticipantThen that makes two of us this morning – I wiped out on the nutrocker boards chicane (MVT, by Roosevelt Island). It was just a little too slick and I leaned into it a bit too far and down I went.
Rode the rest of the way into the office, and as soon as I got off the bike I discovered that I can’t seem to put any pressure on my right leg without a considerable amount of pain.
Alas, will be sag wagon-ing it home this afternoon.

ParticipantThe basic session at Freshbikes will run you about $150. But, depending on your setup, you may end up having to spend more to achieve the fit as it is suggested.
It may very well be that the components on your bike are the right sizes, and that all you need are some position adjustments – but (again, depending on how much you need to change things) you may need to buy new components. Much of this will depend on what types of pain you’re having. My experience (working on sizing on a frame that was too big for me):
–New saddle (independent of the frame, but the width of your sitz bones and how they seat on the saddle can impact comfort. I was riding on a saddle that was much too narrow.
–Crank arm length. Should be towards the bottom of the purchase list because many of the changes that longer/shorter crank arms would achieve can be replicated/approximated by changing saddle height and for/aft position. But if the crank arms are really off (more than 15-20mm) it may be a worthwhile expense.
–Seatpost: Setback or no setback, and length of tube (if you need something that can really sit high off the frame, for example)
–Stem: A few mm can make a pretty significant impact on how far you have to reach to hold the handlebars comforatbly
–Handlebars: Can be too wide or too narrow.
–Pedals: The amount of float can impact how much your knees/ankles move during each pedal strokeSo you might just need to dial in the position of these components (if its a road bike you can really only tweak seatpost height and saddle fore/aft position, everything else is fixed), or you may see a need to invest in some or all of the above – which might be a modest expense or a hefty investment.

Did you put on the camera timer, place it on the conveyor belt pointed at you, then let go?
