    Kevin,
I may want to take the bike off your hands – curious though, how tall your son was when he was using it? My daughter is 4 and pretty tall (about 42″). She’s done a balance bike (the Skuut) but not transitioned to pedals yet.

I’m reviving this thread cause I’m hoping to volunteer for this year’s (2015) session at the end of July.

Anyone else volunteer in the past or thinking about doing it this year?

ArlCo volunteer registration is a bit cumbersome (although I understand why…)

It would not be about structural integrity of the bridge, but about providing access for the people doing repairs, and keeping the public away from the work site. Curb lanes/sidewalks– the outer edges of the bridge– are where people and equipment will go to access the underneath. I’m not saying this can’t be done while also maintaining pedestrian access, but if there are restrictions, that will be the reason, not the weight of the people walking across the bridge.

Its odd then, that they’re planning to close of the 4ft of sidewalk *closest* to the vehicle lanes. Then you’re forcing foot/bike traffic to transit on the section closest to the edge of the bridge….which is exactly where work crews will need access to get over the side and underneath. Unclear how that will work. @Terpfan’s comment that it will probably be one side, then the other makes sense.

Can you imagine what this process is going to be like when they have to do work to Key Bridge like…next year.

Even worse – 14th St bridge (George Mason Bridge). With only about 8 ft of trail on the one side, there’s no way bike/ped traffic would be successfully re-routed.

Came within about 5 seconds of seeing Pete, Lyds, and co. riding back from coffee this morning while heading out to Leesburg with dailyrandonneur and coffeeneur. SO CLOSE!!!

Did pass Rod inbound on the WOD out near Herndon, though!

    Awfully nice! Good karma.
Always liked my Bontragers, had several X’s and Rolf’s. I would snag them but that would be borderline hoarding.

Yeah – they served me well, but no more use for a 9/10 speed hub.

Well that seals the deal. Sounds like commuting home via the canal is a must!

not quite as many inside the beltway, but better than the asphalt.

the flowers along the C&O were fantastic! Anywhere the sun could peak through the trees they lined either edge of the trail. And the fragrance was a bonus!

C&O – even *with* Marathon runners and dozens of school trips at Great Falls – was a treat today.

And then I find another option like this one – fresh out of SOC2015:
    http://www.cyclelicio.us/2015/better-quality-children-bicycles/

Price is pretty steep for the 14″ model, but USA-made, light-weight, scaled down components make it a covet-worthy ride. [EDIT: USA-assembled and USA-company; imported frame/components]

That one sounds like its ripe for a commute along the Mount Vernon Trail – she’ll have to deal with surface streets to get down to the trail (somewhere near Belle Haven Rd/Four Mile Run) and then take Union / Lee through Old town to meet up with the trail again. Get off the trail at the airport and Crystal City access. That makes the ride about 80% on trails and good for a new rider.

not sure its terribly safe. big tv right in front of the stand would definitely topple over if the stand fell into it.

I used to keep one bike hanging on the banister on our entrance stairs. Haven’t done that in a while though

Wabicycles.com carries SSFG wheelsets with fixed/fixed hubs and hex bolt axles (same as the stock wheels that come on their bikes). Not flash, and standard width road rims so perhaps not ideal for 35mm – but good value.

(Since it’s a one-man operation, I imagine the owner might sell the hubs separately if you wanted a build to your own wider rims.)

that is a killer deal – 18mm width would be a limitation, but not a deal breaker.
