Finally – if you’re a WABA member you may be able to get a discount at many LBSs. On a new bike + accessories it might even save you money just to become a member.

WABA recommendation is a very good one – just note that bike shops typically wont apply the standard WABA discount to bike purchases. Components/accessories/services Yes, full builds (because of typically very low margins) No.

50% sounds about right, despite it being a 2012 model. Check online shops (competitivecyclist, wrenchscience) and you’ll see that last year’s models –new bikes, mind you, never ridden–are often deeply discounted 30%-50%.

You might add the Surly Disc Trucker to your candidate lineup. I can’t remember your price ceiling, but at $1400 its got the discs and triple that you’re looking for. I’ve put about 5000 miles on mine in the last 9mo and have been very pleased with it. It’s handled commuting, long distance (centuries, brevets, etc.), gravel (see: Dirt), and the occasional single-track with skill and aplomb. (Yes, I had to double check the definition to make sure it was correct usage.)

    Dirt,
What’s your experience been with medium / long term storage for rice bars and other portables? Especially with meat and/or egg recipes.

Overnight one or two nights in the fridge I’m sure is no problem. Have you tried freezing any batches for an extended amount of time?

I know that Lim and Biju addressed the issue somewhere on the website or in the first book, but it was brief and not very conclusive.

    Your experience?

I rode by as they were building (err…putting it together) last night and one of the boards hadn’t been screwed down yet giving it a really nice Evel Knievel angle to it. I was in a hurry to keep riding through the rain so I just rode around through the grass.

Well then dammit I want a clubhouse. I want a clubhouse where I can get a damn drink after riding and chat for hours on end with other bikers and we can bullshit each other with stories about what great riders we are, and I want miles of rollers through green pastoral country set aside just for club use.

I read the teaser to this post in the “What’s new” view and didn’t read what Thread it was under. Thought it was under the “Commuters – What are your employer asks” and was about to stand up and slow-clap.

Bike cages…showers…community fixit tools. PSHAW. I want a clubhouse where i can get drunk after riding (my bike into work each morning)

This after two weeks ago where their special report (about 20 pages worth) was dedicated to just how great cars are and pronouncing ‘peak car’ to be a long ways off -despite a number of recent studies that note that car use is on the decline, esp. in the US and EU.

Interesting pricing scheme: I don’t really know how to value this bike I have for sale so you tell me what you’d be willing to pay for it.

Like an ebay auction where you dont get to see what the bidding price is.

    1) I’m assuming you mean Independence Ave. — Maine Ave doesn’t start until after the Kutz Bridge and heads southeast towards the waterfront.
    2) Until you get to the mention of them running through the red light, there’s nothing in your description of their behavior that would be considered “illegal” (despite the fact that it’s the very first adverb you use to describe their riding): a) unless there were little kids riding, then no one is required by law to wear a helmet, b) our secret lycra-clad dresscode notwithstanding, there’s nothing that dictates what attire one has to wear while on a bike, c) when riding on ‘sub-standard’ lanes (as defined by DC Code as narrower than 12 ft), cyclists are allowed to take the lane if they believe that hugging the right edge will endanger them or others.

That they chose to run through the red light at 15th is unfortunate and doesn’t reflect well on cyclists in general. TwoWheelsDC is spot on – you could swap out motorist or pedestrian for cyclist in just about any part of your description and it would read exactly the same.

I just noticed that the Bicycle pro Shop right next door to revolution says right on first page of its website that it fixes everything from whatever to ergo levers, so seems they advertise just the service i need and may try them.

I’ve been a long-time customer of BPS. Tom has done top-notch work for me on everything from the road bike to the commuter to the beater fixed gear. They are not cheap and sometimes the reception up at the front of the shop can be cold but b/c Tom has treated me well, I tend to send my money their way for service work that I can’t handle by myself

    Right here

Car had pulled too far out and was blocking the sidewalk – I pinch-flatted the rear tire when I hit the lip of the curb cut going too fast.

Now my sidewall looks like this (yes, that’s the tube popping out of a 1/4″ hole): IMAG0809.jpg

I’m riding around with a new tube and tire for when I finally push my luck too far.

I had the thumb lever on my Ergos go a couple of years ago and was told that the local expert for Campy stuff is Pinky at Revolution in Georgetown. The advice I received was to just go with the brifters (and not the whole bike) so they would charge less.
I ended up not going in the end, but I trusted the source of the recommendation so that’s my suggestion.

So I got pulled over by MPD while riding this morning…

Officer wanted to take a picture of my bike for one of his buddy who needs a nice robust set of wheels:

For some reason forums don’t want to render a twitter image directly…have to save locally as attachment.

At first I was like, no way. Then I saw this picture and I realized that I have to have one of these. At all costs.
