EDIT: Not sure why this reply didn’t reply to dasgeh’s post – anyways:
Good point – Quincy makes plenty of sense too. Me? I like going up and down the hills.

First page? I don’t get pages of Google Image search results anymore…just a continuous flow of thumbnails…none of which have anything to do with Mother Theresa – although if it’s Diego Maradona against Brazil we’re talking about, then…[you’ll either get that joke or you won’t]

Depending on where you are on the W&OD, another option is to get onto the Custis and then do Spout Run –> Lorcom–>Military Road–>Glebe–>Chain Bridge (you can take 41st if Glebe isn’t your cup of tea)

Once on the other side -as Dismal points out – you have a couple of options depending on your route. To get to the CCT, you can a) cross the entire bridge, hop over the low jersey barrier, cross the Parkway, and hike up the portage or b) take the ramp before the end of the bridge down to the towpath and take a right at the bottom (heading toward DC), ride for about 300-400 yards under the old rail bridge, then hike up the side to the CCT.

One last shot – swooped this from Pete’s Flickr set. Me in my happy place before suffering through two tough climbs.

If you look real close you can see the elusive Dirt, aero-ing his way along the gravel road:

I do recall that there are also green arrows/markings on the W&OD pointing to green colored pipes – those are for natural gas pipeline access. The ones you’ve photographed are probably sewage vents or possibly something with the NG lines as well. No steam system in NoVa (over that far, although Crystal City is considering it) and all the electric transmission lines are overhead…so I’m pretty sure its natural gas. I’ll check my copy of “Field Guide to Roadside Technology” and see what it says.

    Wow. Tough questions.

I don’t know if that record store in Adam’s Morgan (on 18th almost at Columbia) is still there or not. (A couple doors up from Asylym and down from the McDs)
Plenty of good bars – depends on where your riding too/from. Lucky Bar used to be big with the courier crowd, no?
Plenty of H St. watering holes that I suspect are good for post-ride drinking over there. (I suspect most of the BA forum members will be more familiar with options across the river in Arlington/Shirlington/Alexandria)

I still haven’t found an LBS that I like to spend much time in, I know a lot of folks are partial to Bicycle Space and Daily Rider, but I don’t see them as hang out spots.

I like shooting the shit with Tom at the Pro Shop but I usually get the stink eye from the guys up front (except for Cycleboredom, he’s cool.)

Sure. I understand the fundamentals of the auctioning program – although there is some bit of irony in the fact that the better they do their job (very broadly speaking), the less revenue they should expect from these types of programs. I’m sure that anyone doing accounting for the various agencies who get revenue from the auctions doesn’t count on it for any budgetary purposes (aside from non-stolen, retired equipment and other goods, I suppose)

Agreed that conflicts arising from designating a single recipient would certainly look bad.

Couldn’t find anything on the MPD website either…but I did see the link to the online auctions (via Govdeals). Look, you can pick up a used POLICE-ISSUE full suspension MTB. *with the official “Police” decal on the top tube.

That’s even better than buying a whited-out Crown Vic (with the mirror side hi-beam light, of course) and rolling around punking people.

C’mon Shawn, you know you want to be *that* guy. I’ll ride around on my Walgoose and you on the Police bike. I can’t think of a better way to roll out from FCC.

    I’m conflicted about this.

There are one or two decent bikes in the lot….but buying somebody’s stolen bike… Kind of leaves a gritty sour taste in the mouth. I think a donation to something like Phoenix would be a more elegant way to unload them.

Ha! I saw Tim too – along the MVT right near the 14th St. Bridge. I was taking the long way around to Hains Point…looked like he was coming back from some laps.
