ParticipantI had been wondering what that structure at Fletchers was going to be used for – now I know. I’ve been riding that stretch of the CCT and/or C&O either daily or at least 2 or 3 times a week for about 5 or 6 years now and I’ve never had that much of an issue with the ‘aroma’…still, good to see this work being done.

ParticipantAlso, how can I get my hot little hands on a mint-condition signed 2013 Pete Beers trading card?

You, sir, are a genius. I bet even a thin sheet of craft foam would help.
speaking of not letting your bike’s paint job get ruined…one tip I can give from a year with the Surly is that if you have an spots (it’ll probably be on the headtube) where cable housing will be rubbing against the paint…then you may want to apply some type of clear sticker because the housing can rub through the powder coat pretty quickly. (Not sure what ALC uses for paint, but I’m guessing that its a pretty standard paint setup for all of the QBP brands. Just something to keep in mind. If I remember it when I go downstairs for the commute home, I’ll snap a picture or two to illustrate.

One of the LBS has them listed at $1,360 for the 700cc caliber version and $1,440 for the disc version. When I looked at one at the same shop last year they were $1,200 with discs.
Interesting.
Nice to see my bike has gone *up* in value – although I wish I had known about the shop that had them advertised for $1200 last year!!:
My receipt from August, 2012:
— Charges —
1 “Surly 2012 Disc Trucker 700 Super Dark Green 56- Serial # M1
7″ @ $1,400.00 T
Subtotal $1,400.00
Tax $1,400.00 @ 6.000% = $84.00Bilsko

I had an external USB battery pack that could recharge the phone a few times while riding. Definitely a good purchase.
This.
When I did the DC Randonneurs Fleche back in April, I used Strava on my HTC EVO. 24hrs moving time 16 hours riding time and Strava did very well recording it all in one go. I have 2 battery packs (an old APC one worth one charge and a larger 4 charge one) – worth it.

Depends on the group ride, how skilled you are, and how comfortable others around you are with you riding in aero.
On the group rides I do, I know most of the people and they are (generally) comfortable with my handling skills. In a pace line, I’ll frequently ride on the hoods until it’s my turn to pull. With charity rides, I think it’s okay to go aero once the crowds have thinned out a little and you self-selected the people you’re pacing with.
Oh. I just figured it was because on a charity ride you probably don’t really know any of the other riders so its OK to skewer them with your aero horns (errr… bars). On a group ride you probably have some friends and skewering them would be a faux pas…like not taking your turn at the front of the pace line.

Ok, the Challenge Ride website changed the map of the course to what was run last year from what was originally posted. Last year’s route was 15 km (9.32 miles) per lap and the new route was supposed to be 16.5 km (10.25 miles) per lap. The website still lists the route as 16.5 km, but I’m betting it is only 15 km. That’s a difference of 9 km (5.58 miles) for six laps. For for six laps of 99 km in 3.5 hours (no breaks), you need to average 28.25 kph (17.57 mph), if it is only 90 km you need to average 25.72 kph (15.98 mph).
So I’m confused – is the PDF map (labeled June 9, 2013) *not* the actual course? I had to force ridewithgps to maps it out with straigh lines (b/c it wouldn’t let me map around the Pentagon), and it came up a bit short on distance (closer to 14.5-15km than to 16.5)…
I can’t imagine it will be substantially different – getting road closure permits around there must be the worst so I’d think that they just go with what’s worked in the past, no?
