For very short breaks, I weave the straps of my bike helmet through my rear wheel and then connect the clasp.

Ah yes, the poor-man’s bike lock. I do this too if I need a very quick solution in a low-probability-of-theft situation. If the would-be thief isn’t expecting it if they try to jump off and ride, they wont get far. You’d have to apply a lot of force to either break a spoke or pull the chinstraps out of the connector clips. On the other hand, it would only take about 5 seconds to unclip it and go.

Another thing you can do is this**:
When you’re arriving at your destination, put your rear derailleur in either the smallest or largest cog and then change gears so that the derailleur is positioned to change to the opposite cog (so if you’re in the smallest, it would jump to the largest) but *DONT* pedal. You can do the same with the front as well if you want.

So you have a bike that is primed to jump 8 or 9 or 10 gears all at once as soon as forward pressure is applied to the pedals. A thief trying to ride away on that will very likely end up with a dropped chain or a real jolt.

Caveat: you need to remember that you did it so when you get back on your bike you don’t end up nose-first on the pavement.

    **SS/FG riders need not apply.

    Mighty sweet ride Bilsko. Impressive.

Was one of the many who saw the handsome couple this morning as well. Great seeing you two as usual. Did someone turn on the AC this morning?

Hey look, dcv, now they’re calling us handsome!!!

    Wait a minute….

I think it’s spelled “Fixtation” with two “T”s. You might confuse the tourists (and locals too) if the sign reads “Fixation This Way”.

Plenty of people used to get their Fix right near there…wasn’t that what the area around Long Bridge Park was all about back in the 80s and 90s?

Sorry, we roll with Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood in my household.

(Although I did download a couple Curious George episodes for long car rides)

Hang a giant banner from one of the buildings facing the river?

I was in the middle of doing a mockup of exactly this idea (had my screen grab of the buildings and was going all MSPaint on it with a big “Fixation This Way” Arrow sign about 300 ft tall. Then I came back and Shawn beat me to it.

Got to stop and have a great chat with dcv at Gravelly Pt this morning – and I got some free pictures of my bike out of it too. Right, dcv?

But seriously, there are a lot of inexperienced group riders at the back. For that matter there are plenty of inexperienced group riders at the front too…

Just don’t overlap wheels with anyone and watch out for people dodging potholes and you should be okay.

Pacing ranges from a consistently 22-23 at the front and probably drops to about 14 at the back.

    6:30 it is, then.

Me, Megabeth, Dave, Tim and some others are rolling tonight, but will probably roll early – 6:30. Welcome to join. Either way, watch for all the pavement work on Quincy. If I were rolling with the big group on that, I’d stay at the very front or very very back.

OK – sounds like 6:30 is the way to go. Will try my best to get to the shop by then, but if you don’t see me there at 6:30 +/- 5 minutes, then don’t wait.

I’ll be there (wearing my BA jersey) unless some crisis happens between now and then. I usually try to keep toward the front, as shenanigans seem to increase toward the back of the group. The cool kids start at 630 to mitigate this problem, but I don’t yet feel worthy to try and hang with them, so I continue to ride with the unwashed masses.

Shenanigans at the back? I would think all the racers would be gunning for position up at the front.
I’d try to get there early, but not sure I can do 630

Reviving a long-sleeping thread. Is anyone riding tonight’s FB Tuesday-night ride? I’ve got a buddy going and was thinking of riding too.

Completely different jurisdictions. NPS (per Congress) specifically limits commercial activity, Virginia permits sponsorship and informational signage. (There are several signed shops, not just bikenetic.)

So the next question is where exactly the MVT (and NPS oversight) ends if you’re taking the Crystal City access path. If the turn-off from the main MVT is no longer NPS, then a large enough sign might work. But if the MVT extends all the way to or past the tunnel, then it would be more difficult.

Is any of that land MWAA controlled?

We’re glad everyone is excited about this. We are, too, though we have to admit we’re scrambling a bit as both CCBID and we were told it wouldn’t arrive until Sept. Anyway, we hope to have it up and running in the next few days. I’d especially like to thank the good folks at the CCBID for initiating this partnership. Yet another positive for cycling in Arlington/DC.

Am I missing something? You were in the Left Turn lane on 7th heading North, waiting to make a Left on to PA (to hop into the CYcletrack, presumably) and a cab went around you to make an illegal left turn across 4 lanes of PA East-bound traffic *and* two bike lanes?

    WTF is with people?
