Considering the relationship between the USPS and DC bike lanes, I can say with 100% certainty that anyone wearing a USPS kit does not live anywhere near a bike lane.
Cycleboredom has a USPS kit (from way back in the day) that I think he sports every once in a while in a ironic/not ironic manner. He’s on the trails quite a bit. But, that’s the only exception I can think of.

I viewed an exhibit about the Anacostia River at the Anacostia Community Museum a couple of weeks ago. One of the placards had a picture and write-up of a law librarian at the Library of Congress whose March-November commute is as follows: Bike to Bladensburg boat house from home, row a single scull to Anacostia boat house, pick up a second bike and ride the remaining 1.5 miles to the Library. Now that’s multi-modal!
That makes me curious as to what the most multi-modal commute (that involves a bike) that someone consistently does is.
Bike–>boat–>ski-lift–>bike #2–>Capitol Subway system–>zipline–>bike#3 anyone?

Depends on how you define the line between crazy and really crazy…
Ummm., you do remember me as your teammate in the BAFS competition this winter, right? I may not be Dimsal crazy, but I’m pretty far out there.

ParticipantNot to derail this from the JB Granfondo, but am I really crazy to be thinking about the Frederick Gran Fondo (100m route) on my 48×18 SS? Course map gives me the impression that there is no gravel at all on the route. I’m not looking to break any records on the climbs, but I’m also not looking to break my legs.

I’ve done a similar ride with Dirt and Tuba recently (shorter ride, but more or less same elevation::distance ratio) – I was geared, but only ran 48x (11-25).

You can call ME daddy.
That’s me christening my new SSCX bike on the sweet sweet gravel of the Old Waterford Road on Sunday.

I’m kind of serious about this one. I did see a sign on the 4MRT this afternoon, but really have no idea.

C’mon man! you need to hang an NSFW tag off of that link!
[Or maybe you don’t – I’m just definitely not going to have that link show up in my browser history at work.]

This morning I was crossing L St. NW on foot at 22d just right of the crosswalk when a car entered the cycle track. So I stood there and told him and he wasn’t supposed to be there and I stood in his way with my hand up indicating he couldn’t proceed. He said (1) he was entering a driveway on that block, and (2) he had a baby in the car but I didn’t see the relevance of either argument. I didn’t budge and he didn’t run me over or threaten to. He eventually had to back up to go forward in the car lane. That forced him to wait a light cycle because he had missed a whole cycle while arguing with me.
1) Nicely done informing them of the rules. Do be careful though, you never know how crazy the person behind the wheel can be.
2) Both the driveway and baby are entirely possible – The garage entrance to 2101 L St (the offices above the Citibank at 21&L) is halfway down the block *and* there is a daycare on 21st right next to the entrance to the offices – and a lot of people use the garage to pickup/dropoff their kids at that daycare. This *does not* justify or excuse the guy from following the rules of the road, as you did well to point out.Bilsko

He says that he will now post more frequently on GreaterGreater Washington, and less so on his Washcycle blog. While some of the other sources he mentions do cover bike issues, they don’t focus on them the same way that Washcycle does (or did).
He does offer to let someone else take over the heavy lifting at Washcycle going forward. If there are any interested candidates, read through his post and see if it’s something you might like to do. I’ve thought about suggesting an assistant Washcycle in the past, and now it looks like there is an immediate “need” for one.
Isn’t Washcycle something of a D.C. bike institution now? Sort of like what BikeWashington might have been in the past? (BikeWashington was before my time, as a cyclist. I read through some of it when I started up, but it was already starting to get out of date.)
This is sad news, although with 2 or 3 little ones at home, I can definitely understand the difficulty with the time committment.

Let’s keep this simple. Third Thursday HH is in Fairfax for August, and in Shirlington for September.
For August only, I am organizing an “extra” HH in Shirlington on the 22nd, which I’ll call the Aug. 22 Shirlington HH.
All who would like do do any other happy hours anywhere at any time (including Third Thursdays) are warmly invited to volunteer to organize them.

I’ve worked with 5 or 6 different companies over the last 3 years. I just finished working with Pactimo on a project and, though the jerseys turned out great, they were NOT very easy to work with.
By far the best I’ve ever worked with was Sommerville Sports. http://sommervillesports.com/ They’re a smaller company, but growing their business. They were the folks that did my “I
My Commute” kit and they did an awesome job. The design process was easy… I told Dave what I had in mind and he sent me 3 designs. I picked the design I liked best, made a couple of suggestions for improvements and he sent me back the final proof. Once I signed off on that and sent a deposit, stuff happened very quickly. Turn-around time was supposed to be 4-6 weeks. I had stuff in hand in a little over 2 weeks.
I really like their ideas on how they do minimum orders. 5 is the minimum for each category (tops, bottoms, etc) and you can mix and match within that category. For instance, I ordered 2 sets of shorts and 3 sets of knickers to make the minimum. You could do 2 short sleeve jerseys and 3 long sleeve to make up the minimum order. It is a cool idea. Follow-on orders can then be done on a one-off basis. The prices were very good too.
The shorts are so good that I’ve been using them for pretty much all of my rides. Great stuff!
I’ve checked out their website in the past when you’ve mentioned it – they look great.
Just a tad steep for what I can spend solo, but partnering up with one or two (or more) other people for a bigger order would make a lot of sense.July 26, 2013 at 2:21 am in reply to: Shinola Bike Tour at Freshbikes in Arlington on Friday, 7/26 from 3-6pm #976704Bilsko

ParticipantAugust is a bit off with the 1st falling on a Thursday – are people thinking the 15th (true third) or 22nd (more like 3/4 of the way through the month)?
I’m hesitant to commit to helping plan because I may have travel in the middle of August, but if I’m around I’ll aim to show up (especially in the Arlington/Crystal City/Alexandria area)

ParticipantOne more locking up tip:
If you’re using a U-Lock. put the crossbar next to the frame (as opposed to the thing you’re locking up to). If the thief is going to use leverage to pry/pop it off, they’ll likely need to apply force to the frame, bending it, which would make it less attractive of a haul.
