That looks more like a storm sewer than a tunnel, i image it floods a lot?
the tunnel to the left is the trail. it does flood.
below is a picture taken slightly farther south on the trail.

Participanti have only gone through the tunnel once.
btw, how do i make the picture larger?
the faq states: “As a member, you can create Albums of images that are linked to your public profile. Albums can be created by visiting the User Control Panel, and clicking on the ‘Pictures & Albums’ link, and then clicking on ‘Add Album’.”
but i could not find a ‘pictures & albums’ link.January 29, 2012 at 3:09 am in reply to: DC to Tysons Corner (just inside beltway) route request #935244bikesnick

Participantyour route looks good. the traffic on route 7 is something to avoid.
two of the neighborhood sections involve hills: from pimmit to idylwood, and fisher to magarity.

Participant+1 for using a car rack. i also have used a rope hanging from the basement ceiling under the saddle to hold the back wheel off the ground.
i use an old toothbrush and long strip of cloth (like flossing) for cleaning cogs. another tool i just read about is a pipe-cleaner. there is a bicycle specific cleaning pipe cleaner, but assume any pipe cleaner would work as well.
yes, cleaning a cassette and chain is dirty business. dish cleaning soap works great for cleaning hands afterwards.

Participanti am thankful to God for His protection during my recent wipe out on the mvt/4mr trail. even though i was knocked unconscious (a first for me) the only serious injury was a torn ligament in my right hand (and of course, road rash). i need to wear a splint for 3 weeks, but hope to do some stationary cycling until then.
happy thanksgiving.

Participantyou may want to investigate bikes to borrow.
i have not used them, but read a review of someone that was positive.

Participantthanks everyone for all the comments and good advice.
i *did* visit my doctor this morning and everything checks out ok. he said to continue doing what i am doing and pay attention to any headaches, nausea, etc. if i feel the same or better tomorrow, he considers me ‘out of the woods’.
this morning i did feel alot better. my arm still is very sore, but he said no bones were broken. i never had any headache and there are no problems with speech, vision, hearing, etc.to the best of my recollection, i believe my tire lost air pressure as i rounded the curve. (it is flat now.) i remember feeling the bike slip. looking to the right, i saw the rocks and thought that was *not* a good place to land. apparently, i did unclip my shoes before going down. my right arm was either underneath me or twisted on the side. that is the arm that still hurts. my gloves and clothes are not damaged, but my helmet has some abrasions. (yes, i will be purchasing a new helmet.)
thanks again. the cycling community is a great support.

Participantthanks for all the comments. this was my first crash after many years of riding. i am feeling fine, but sore. my forearm is the most sore. i can turn it radially the same as my other arm, but can not pick up anything very heavy, nor put any weight on it. i have been putting an ice pack on it. (i think i landed on my arm and it was underneath me. there is no damage to my gloves. i think the bike slipped out underneath me.)
Mark,
Once things get a little settled, would be interested in hearing about the condition of your tire. I’ve never really experienced much trail debris on the curve, and if that’s changed, it would be good to know.
yes, me too. i did a quick look and did not see any damage. there was/is some loose dirt on the turn. maybe i hit that.
I *totally* would have opted for the airboat ride.
ha. i doubt the airboat would have gone to the hospital, but i should have asked.
Steve,
Were you by chance wearing a helmet?
absolutely! that and God’s care protected me.
and yes, i will be buying a new helmet./glenn

NYC has a bike share that is supposed to launch summer 2012. Perhaps then it will be possible.
it also is possible to rent bikes in nyc. we rented from bike and roll for the 5 boro ride in may. the bikes were new and worked great. they have cruisers, comfort, performance, race, tandem, and kids bikes.

Participantin this washington post article (from october 2008), the author describes his day trip from bethesda to nyc (by bus) for a day of riding his bicycle in manhattan. (he was 78 years old.)

Participantliz,
thanks for the collage – it looks great!
i am glad you rode and finished. we also finished and had an enjoyable time, and next time i will remember to bring a camera.
/bsSeptember 4, 2011 at 12:38 am in reply to: Martin Luther king Memorial doesnt like cyclists walking their bikes #929825bikesnick
Participantthis was discussed on dcist.
apparently, the memorial has not yet been turned over to the nps, it still is under the authority of the mlk national memorial foundation.
so, there is some confusion about bicycles being allowed.
hopefully it will all get cleared up after (before?) the dedication.
