Statue of Gandhi outside of the Indian Embassy. It is surrounded by granite slabs with inscriptions honoring him.

Samuel Hahnemann Monument, dedicated to the founder of homeopathy. I like the colorful mosaic.

Moby Dick’s – probably for many of us our first introduction to Persian food. We also have a large Iranian population in DC (the 3rd largest in the US). Many of them came after the Iranian revolution including the founder of Moby Dick. It was originally a sandwich shop in Bethesda and then later changed to a Persian menu. It was named after a popular kabob joint near the American Embassy during the Shah’s time, because that owner liked the book. Now you can’t go anywhere in the DMV without running into a Moby Dick’s. Another success story!

Every city also needs a Polish Deli! Most of the ones in the area are in the burbs but there is Stachowski’s in Georgetown. They don’t have many Polish things other than a pretty extensive selection of sausages but they have some gigantic sandwiches including a 4 meat grinder and a pastrami sandwich that can take 2 meals to finish.

We have a no of Salvadorans in the DC area which has resulted in a no of restaurants serving Mexican and Salvadorian food including Ericilia’s in Mt Pleasant. Not sure what are all the different dishes that El Salvador is famous for but one of them is pupusas!

Marconi Memorial in Mt Pleasant to commemorate the inventor of wireless telegraph and the radio. This gilded memorial is apparently one of the rare ones in DC to commemorate an individual associated with technology and was originally going to be in Meridian Hill Park with the Dante memorial.

Surprisingly difficult but I think I found a post office in DC. Most post offices at least the ones close to downtown tend to be inside a building which probably doesn’t allow them to hang a US Post Office lettering on the outside. This one is located on U St in the Municipal Affairs building and fortunately had lots of windows so that you can see the sign inside.c12617d57c609a18f86d588dc908f407.jpg

Another LFL on 17th St in Mt Pleasant. This one is further down the hill at 3436 17th St and could use some more fiction. It also contained a random book on Bhutan!

Yerevan, the first Armenian cafe in DC. I don’t know much about the contributions of Armenian but apparently some famous Armenians include Cher, Andre Agassi, and Kim Kardashian. And good coffee if you like it strong!

Not sure if a marker counts but Boundary Stone SW9 is named Benjamin Banneker: SW9 in honor of a free African American astronomer who assisted in the survey that established the original boundaries of DC. Some also consider the boundary stones the first federal monument although they don’t commemorate any person but I suppose the survey project or original boundaries.

    Peirce Mill.

All this time I didn’t realize that was the correct spelling! What’s confusing is that there are some other locations in that area that use Pierce for the spelling like Pierce-Klingle Mansion. I guess that was a different family!

LFL at 3300 17th St NW in Mt Pleasant. Had a mix of children’s, young adult, and other fiction. It sure could use some more children’s and young adult books!
