ParticipantI think the solution is a repurposing of the traffic light sensors that pick up cars and not bikes.
(1) Senors would alert police to a possible incursion, (2) police would check with NVRPA on whether or not a maintenance vehicle was supposed to be in the area, (3) if not, dispatch squad car to nearest likely exit.

ParticipantME: Heading east this morning behind a slower cyclist in Bannecker Park waiting for you, heading west, to go by before passing.
YOU: Making a sweeping, high-speed turn onto the bridge over Four Mile Run.
ME: Hmm?
YOU: Crashing on the wooden bridge still moist from nightime rain.
ME: Stopping and shouting to you from just out of sight, “You all right?”
YOU: “Yeah.”
ME: “Slow down, those things are slippery.”

You clearly don’t understand the concept. Just because you don’t know how something works doesn’t mean, as a man, you can’t explain it anyway.
Thanks for the clarification. I always thought “mansplaining” meant “the act of a man explaining something at which he is competent to a woman in a pedantic and condescending way.”
For future reference, I will delete the italicized words from my mental definition.

ParticipantStopped to help a young lady cyclist at TR Island whose chain had overshot the big ring. She was trying to backpedal it on, but got it jammed at the derailleur. I fixed it with one crank rotation forward. She said she was on her “first ride without my husband” in a charming East-European accent.
Guys, please show your SOs the basics of how to deal with the minor hiccups that can happen while riding so they don’t have to worry about the creepy looking old guy on the weird bike stopping to help them and then mansplaining* how to work their bikes.
*I actually could not engage in mansplaining in this case as I had no idea how to work her bike’s brifters.

ParticipantI used to string together MTB rides using the W&OD and the parallel gravel bridle path that has little singletrack trails splitting off, but this is all outside the beltway. There are some trails in Eudora and Northside Parks in Vienna. Further west in Reston is the Cross County Trail (north of W&OD, and south of W&OD which connects to more singletrack in the common areas behind the houses). Even further west is Fairfax Lake Park via the Difficult Run Trail which goes all the way to Great Falls (when you’re ready for it).

My boss was taken out this morning inbound on the Custis on one of those narrow blind curves w/ the retaining wall on one side and Lee Hwy on the other. He was passed by a fast-moving cyclist who cut back in front of him and took out my boss’ front wheel. Boss man hit a light post pretty hard and tore up his knee (only road rash fortunately). The guy stopped and apologized but quickly took off w/o making sure my friend needed help.
If you insist on riding recklessly and your recklessness causes a crash please remember that there are no team cars or medical support vehicles so, you know, be a decent human and stuff.
This and discussion on another thread makes me think “Custis Trial” is not so much of a mistype these days, as well as glad I opted for the long way in via W&OD this morning.

Must have gotten between him and his hourly coffee and donuts break.
Reminds me of the time I was on E. Basin Drive signalling my left turn onto the ramp to the 14th Street bridge and the motorcycle cop passed me ON THE LEFT. 😡

Painted on no passing zones approaching blind corners really does seem like the right balance to me. It’s a good reminder for the ignorant yet impedes nobody in any way.
This, but follow the same patterns as used on 2-way highways, not the ill-maintained single line used now (which on the Custis was left unpainted in the resurfaced stretches done about 3 years ago).

Maybe this section calls for speed bumps, I am serious. Instead of pavement they could use those thick paint stripes versions.
Or just a repaving moratorium. Might be more in line with the NPS budget.

Couldn’t get my shoes completely dry this morning, even though they’re about 90% mesh.
Stuff your shoes with newspaper immediately after a wet ride, remove the paper after a few hours, then either re-stuff with dry newspaper, or put shoes in front of a fan.

ParticipantI think I see your problem. GPO is an agency of the Legislative Branch of the U.S Government. The Executive Branch tends to take better care of its employees and provide for things like space for employee-supported fitness centers (with showers) and bike parking.

ParticipantPop-up CaBI stations at Metro stations, e.g., at East Falls Church?
Will Metro be cutting all volume on Orange and Silver lines beyond EFC, or will trains will be off-loading at EFC and turning around back to Vienna and Reston? If the latter, people might be interested in using CaBI to finish the trip.
