Hah! Just 30 pounds? You kids today. In my day, we were all 100 pounds over, and that was before we ate all our pie! Stop complaining, you spoiled kids.

For whatever reason, the thought of crossing the river on bike seemed so daunting.
Daunting? You kids have it easy! In my day, we didn’t have any of these fancy-schmancy “bridges.” You had to hitch a ride on a riverboat every day. It cost us ten cents – that was alot back then! When the weather was bad and the boat wasn’t running, we had to swim through a storm while holding our bikes in one arm! And that was after riding through 20 feet of snow.

I was rather hoping this would prompt others to tell their bike commuting anniversary, origin, and history stories. I mean, one shouldn’t be intimidated by Steve O’s,, um, seniority.
LOL, seniority, right.
I started commuting in 1988 from Alexandria. I still have the button I got at the very first Bike to Work day, and my old permit to bring a bike on Metro when you needed one. I also biked through 20 feet of snow to get to school.

ParticipantThere are two ways to start on a bike from a standing position – standing in front of the seat over the top tube with both feet on the ground, or standing with the bike slanted sideways and one leg partly over. Maybe she is uncomfortable with on of those and needs to try the other?

You: 30-ish blonde with glasses and a pony-tail right by the off-ramp from George Washington Memorial Parkway to Memorial Drive.
Me: Scantily-clad tearing through the whips of wind on this cool Autumn morning emblazoned by the rising sun.
When our eyes met, I could sense the attraction immediately, you crept closer and never looked away. We made eye contact up until…….. I needed to remind you that you are sitting in a mid-sized SUV and I am clipped into a road bike at high speed with the right-of-way. I’m not interested in our crossing paths again, no hard feelings, I hope this message finds you well.
As the founder of this thread, I must say you nailed it.

The only reason I don’t give the WH the finger as I bike through there is that I’m too busy dodging people on the sidewalk or I’m too distracted by the cute secret service doggies.
It’s easy to flip off Trump’s hotel from the Penn. Ave. cycle track though.

ParticipantWaiting at a red light this morning downtown. Old guy in a red corvette waiting to turn left pulls up just to the edge of the intersection (but not into it). As his light turns red and mine green, I see two cyclists proceed through the intersection in front of him. Well, he decides he’s going to make that left and comes a foot from hitting one of the cyclists.
Lesson for drivers: if you’re going to do the pull-up-and-turn-left as the light turns thing, do it. Go all the way into the intersection so you’re clearly in front of opposing traffic and it can’t possibly get in front of you first. Be predictable.
Lesson for cyclists: watch out for idiots.

I downloaded the limebike app to use the free intro ride. It showed a bike in the parking lot behind the Van Ness ES. I took my helmet, walked over there. And after walking all around the back of the school, I found no bike. A mistake? Inside? There is a way to report an illegally parked bike, but I don’t think to report a missing one.
Do you reserve a bike before going to get it, like with Car2Go? If not, maybe someone else simply rode the bike before you got there. Could be a frustrating problem.

Yeah, of the ebikes I see on my commute, zero are driven by parents with children or the physically challenged.
Well, one can’t just look at a cyclist and know they aren’t physically challenged.

ParticipantThis is a bit like Car2Go, where CaBi is Zipcar.
If they can avoid theft and other hijinks, it could work great.
