ParticipantKomorebi, I love that you want to support Freezing Saddles and Feeding Saddles in some way! If you make a contribution to Feeding Saddles, I’ll add ten dollars to Mikey’s charity.
And if you decide that you’d like to try winter riding again, we’ll all be here to offer help and support!

ParticipantI decided that I want to participate in Feeding Saddles to help motivate someone who:
– I don’t know,
– is new to Freezing Saddles, and perhaps to winter riding,
– has introduced himself/herself on the forum,
– has made a few posts,
– and who seems like someone who will be a great addition to FS 2015.Tawdryaudre, you’re on! I love that you’re going car-free and are looking forward to helping to raise funds to help others. I’ll contribute 10 cents for each mile you ride for Freezing Saddles!

ParticipantMy own two cents is that “Freezing” Saddles should be for people who plan to ride at least somewhat frequently in winter. I’m concerned that encouraging people to register for that who have no intention of riding in winter may create a lot of extra headaches for the people doing the work

ParticipantMikey and Dasgeh – I don’t understand why Freezing Saddles participation should be an absolute requirement for Feeding Saddles. Shouldn’t we encourage support from the sidelines? And I especially don’t understand why we would want to encourage Freezing Saddles registration by people who have no intention of doing frequent winter rides.

ParticipantSpeaking of Moose Mitts, has anyone ever tried to use flat bar Moose Mitts on a bikeshare bike? Someone brought that thought up earlier today. They were actually talking about bar mitts, but I don’t think those would fit.

I think people should be able to enjoy being part of FS without dealing with macho BS/etc *without* having to sign up as a slacker. That’s why I object to the slacker team – it implies if you’re not on it you have to take the “competition” seriously, and it discourages people from signing up and trying to ride through the winter as part of a fun group game, which was part of the intention of it all.
I don’t really care either way if the team exists or not or is actually shown on the leaderboard, but I do think newbies should be discouraged from joining it, as it is sort of pointless.
I’m with Will on this. I don’t feel strongly one way or another about whether there should be a slackers team in future years, but the decision has already been made to have one this year.
That being said, I strongly hope that the slackers team will consist mostly (or maybe solely) of former competitors who have participated heavily in previous years and/or contributed in a very significant way to the success of Freezing Saddles, such as by managing all the leaderboards, being team captains, creating amazing awards or otherwise doing something awesome.
Newbies will have much more fun if they participate on a team other than the slackers, and I think we all should encourage them to do that. The game is designed so that all of the teams will have people of varying abilities, and a great deal of value can be added to a team by riding at least a mile every day that’s possible in terms of safety and other responsibilities. Competitive doesn’t have to be ultra-competitive. It just means you’re playing for team points. Most of all, it’s all just for fun!

ParticipantStrava should soak up little if any battery. Since you are new to smartphones as well, my guess is that something else is going on. Maybe someone at HDCC can help. Also, navigating (vs recording) WILL eat up battery.
Arlingtonrider
ParticipantWow. Both you and the dog could have been badly hurt. My take is that her thank you was an acknowledgement of responsibility, and I’m pretty certain she learned her lesson. I’m glad you’re ok.

I wouldn’t say it’s mine, it is just coffee and bacon cheddar scones and monkey bread yum!
I’ll make the edit, but it was meant as sort of a thank you for coming up with this great idea a couple of years ago.

ParticipantThere were six of us at Best Buns this morning wishing the same thing.
Also, a reminder about Black Friday Coffee Club this week, again at Best Buns in Shirlington. All are welcome!
Arlingtonrider
ParticipantI’m in for both HDCC and Black Friday coffee clubs at Best Buns. I think Mikey started and is official organizer of the Black Friday one.

ParticipantThanks. Great to know! Do you use the tapatalk app?

ParticipantDasgeh, please don’t sign off yet. I have one more thing for you! Will edit this to add it.
Darn – too late, but just in case you see this later – on both sides of the Shirlington Road crossing are new “beg” lights (?) that, when a cyclist or pedestrian pushes a button, light up a small sign on a pole on that side of the street that says “Crosswalk.” The problem is that because of the small size of the crosswalk signs and the bright lights of the gas station behind them, the signs are barely noticeable. Previously, the buttons triggered bright flashing lights. Would it be possible to add some flashing lights back in?
Another issue is that the beg button lights only work for the nearest two lanes of traffic, so you’re on your own once you get to the little median strip. It would be great if a way could be found to make them visible to the cars going in both directions so that they help in getting all the way across the road.
Thanks!

There was a cyclist hurt on the mvt just north of the 4mrt. Multiple emergency vehicles. Anyone know what happened?
Nothing was going on there when I rolled through around 6:30 – 6:40 or so. I hope the cyclist will be ok. Was it at the split off for Alexandria? I’ve seen some near collisions there before.

ParticipantKLizotte – Could you edit your post above to better reflect which underpass you are talking about? The Shirlington one or the one on the Custis?
