Hello team, . . . Its my first ever FS so I have no idea what to expect.

What to expect is lots of fun. I’ve made so many great friends through Freezing Saddles!

Everyone else is introducing themselves here, so I will too. I’m Kathy and, like eminva, this is my third year in Freezing Saddles, which is from its beginning. I live in the Shirlington area and bike commute to work near the Capitol. Most of my riding is commuting, but I try to ride a mile or more every day, especially during Freezing Saddles. Realizing that any one day I miss means that someone else would have to ride ten miles to make up for it keeps me motivated to get out there every day. Most of my weekend rides are for errands or fun destinations to meet with friends and/or enjoy a cup of coffee or a meal, but I also go out just for the heck of it and occasionally do group rides as well. I know a couple of people on this team pretty well – eminva and CBGanimal, and am looking forward to getting to know the rest of you (or getting to know you better) during Freezing Saddles. The competition aspect of Freezing Saddles is fun and has so many wonderful collateral benefits.

The photo syncing sounds brilliant. Thanks for developing that feature, and kudos to whoever had that idea.

Many thanks to everyone who came out to the happy hour last night and made it such a fun evening! It was awesome to see so many people show up and I hope everyone was able to connect with some of their teammates.

Thanks too to everyone who helped out during the event and special thanks to Boomer4U and Lord of the Mark for leading an intrepid convoy to the event!

Congrats again to Rod Smith for winning the overall Jan 1 Gold Nugget award (just over 132 miles) and to Eric Williams for winning the newbie Gold Nugget award (120.4 miles). Great accomplishments on a cold day!

I hope people will post photos from last night and maybe Vicegrip (last year’s Gold Nugget winner) can do a little write up about the creation of his amazing legacy award for overall Gold Nugget winners.

Thanks again to all who came last night! I hope everyone had a good time and got home safely.

Yay Liz! What a nice surprise it was to see that you are our captain! For those of you who don’t know, Liz is a third time Freezing Saddles participant, a certified League of American Cyclists instructor, a Rapha Festivus award winner (for riding 500 km between Dec. 23 and Dec. 31) and an all around awesome person. We’re in good hands.

As far as team names, we are in no way wedded to the number 13, the square or anything else. We can choose any team name we want. As a past maker of awards that sometimes had team names on them, shorter names (2-4 words) might make life easier for someone.

One thing I was told about our team is that about half of us are in Virginia and about half in DC.

It’s a historical thing. When Freezing Saddles started three years ago, the forum was just the BikeArlington forum, so #BAFS gained usage as standing for BikeArlington Freezing Saddles. Old habits die hard, even though BikeArlington has since invited other jurisdictions to join and participate in the forum.

The WOD was cleared between Columbia Pike and Walter Reed only, not all the way to Shirlington. It looks as if the clearing was only “one lane” wide, not like the Custis. I speculate that it was done by a third party, not Arlington nor NVRPA.

One option at Walter Reed, if you want to stay on trails, is to leave the WOD, cross Four Mile Run Road, go across the bridge, and then take the FMR trail on the left alongside S. Arlington Mill Drive. That trail is clear and dry, and you can use it to hook back up with the WOD at Shirlington Road.

I just went out and poked around a little bit on 32 slicks. Lots of melting! Condition reports below.

For the Alexandria folks: Commonwealth to FMR is clear and dry, although there are a few small slushy areas in the bike lanes.

FMR has been clear and dry for days, but now some of the underpasses, especially those near Shirlington, have areas with water from overhead dripping, so be a little watchful for ice there when it gets colder.

Eads is clear and dry, and as is the rest of the trip into Shirlington from Eads.

The MVT is tempting, but there are still some very hazardous patches here and there. While long stretches are clear and dry, the overpasses, some approaches to them and some other areas still have ice, snow, slush, and/or black ice. I walked some of those. I was going to try to get up to Gravelly Point, but if you look at my strava route, you’ll see where I turned around. I was going to try to walk that too, but it felt pretty dicey even for walking my bike at that particular spot. Still, it’s getting much better!

I saw and was greeted by another FSer as I was rolling back down the MVT getting ready to go right on FMR. :)

I remember that from last year now. Ridiculous! Time to write NVRPA a note. Please let me know if you find a contact there.

Dasgeh, are those two parkway crossings safely doable during rush hour? I’ve only done them on weekends.

Just curious – are you enjoying your terror with or without studded tires today?

Just bumping this up. @Arlingtonrider 103273 wrote:

The happy hour has been changed to Friday, Jan. 9. Same place and time – Capitol City Brewing Company in Shirlington at 6 p.m.

    Getting here:

This is one time when transportation other than biking might be the best option for many of us. As of Thursday evening, the bridges and approaches were reportedly still icy and rutted and many trails or trail segments had large patches of ice. Nevertheless, there is a separate Freezing Saddles thread with convoy info for those interested.

It’s easy get to Shirlington by bus from the Pentagon metro stop. Most come non-stop directly to the Shirlington Transit Center, which is almost around the corner from Capitol City Brewing Company. The buses with direct routes from the Pentagon to Shirlington are the 7C, 7A, 7E, ART 87X and I think one of the 23’s or 25’s. You might want to check the WMATA trip planner. Lots of buses run at rush hour, but fewer head back later on, so planned options for leaving times could be helpful.

Car and bike parking info is at the end of this post. In addition to the bike racks shown on the diagram, there are numerous U racks under a cover near the bus station and also at the library down the street. Those with cable locks can also lock up to lamp posts. Kel and Casey know the area and will be keeping an eye out in case anyone needs help finding bike parking. (However, with the weather being this cold, I’m no longer concerned about parking for 77 bikes. ;))

While the event officially starts at 6, you’re welcome to show up earlier if you would like to. A few of us will be there setting up starting around 5:30.

    The event:

Because we have such a large group, we are asking for a $5-$10 cash contribution to offset the cost of an appetizer buffet. Any leftover funds will be used for the final happy hour event.

We’ll have some area biking maps available as well as the reflective blue bike forum tags, which are probably pretty good identifiers for our group. In addition, I believe that Miss Myrna has volunteered to provide an opportunity to order Girl Scout cookie fuel for cyclists.

We have an area in the back of the room where panniers, backpacks and jackets can be left before you get your nametag and team number.

I’m reserving some nearby booths and/or tables in the main restaurant area where teammates and friends can get together for dinner or more food if the room gets too crowded.

Gold nuggets will be awarded at 7 pm and we may have a brief announcement or two. We’ll try to take some team photos if people would like them.

    Parking:

Bike and car parking info is in the diagram below. The diagram shows a lot of the bike parking, but there are also a number of U racks under a shelter near the bus station just up the street, and more at the library. For those coming by car, Shirlington has several garages and parking is free in most of them after 5:00 pm.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Any other updates will be in edits to this post.

Looking forward to seeing everyone! :) Hopefully it will be a little warmer and the roads and trails will be clear by then.

Great report subby. Lots of people riding over to the BAFS happy hour tomorrow from DC I think are going to be unpleasantly surprised by how bad the trails get when unplowed. Hoping for more details or safe-ish alternate route suggestions on Friday if you can!

The first post in the Jan 9 happy hour thread (the one that starts with “Alert”) has been updated to include information on buses from the Pentagon metro. There are several that go directly to Shirlington non-stop, and the Shirlington bus station is practically across the street from Capitol City Brewing Co. With the bridges still icy and the MVT unrideable, at least without studs and maybe even with studs, I hope more people will consider using public transportation. I love ya’ll.

I just rode east on Four Mile Run from Shirlington to the MVT. As others mentioned earlier, FourMile Run trail is dry and clear up to the MVT. The MVT is still a complete mess with lots of ice.

Please be careful everyone! It’s easy to get to Shirlington using bus and metro and it’s better to be smart than to get hurt. I updated the first post in the happy hour thread to provide a little more info about buses from Pentagon metro station. You can always make up the mileage another time if you are concerned or don’t have the right equipment.

The art was very generously designed and created by Dickie and his wife, Carolyn, both of whom are artists and beloved members of this forum. I agree with Shawn and americancyclo that they should be asked. Maybe someone who sees Dickie frequently and can ask in person?

I added some info about buses to the top post in this thread. Any further updates about the happy hour will be in that post. Stay safe, everyone!
