Since I’ve failed miserably at anything in person with 2017 and now 2018 Freezing Saddles I’m going to do my best. Living and working in VA means I’m never in DC, but I really will try to be there.

PS Will the zipper pulls be available?

Hello! Are these still available? Any chance 2018 and a 2017 would be available? Hi, super late to the game in asking.

    Thanks!

    Hi team!

I’m Amelia. I live in Clermont, Alexandria (aka the Eisenhower Ave Connector or Gates to Narnia, choose your name) and commute to Crystal City. I started bike commuting roughly 2015 and did Freezing Saddles last year on recommendation of a coworker. This is now my 2nd year and I’m determined to not break the streak, even if yesterday I was #2 for sleaze rides.

Sorry to miss meeting any of you at the happy hour. I’m off to the Bahamas on Saturday to run a half marathon on Sunday (as one does). But don’t worry, I’ve rented a bike for the week so the streak shall live on. I’ll be cheersing ya’ll from some sunny temps next week.

Hope to meet more Freezing Saddles folks this year. I didn’t meet any last year, though it is tricky when I never really leave the ALX-Arlington Crystal City portion of the WDC area.

Best from Amelia and Synner (road bike) and Snow Fairy (fat tire hybrid that’s been in the basement since November of 2015)

PS I’m good with Ochooooooooooo but also love Donuts so would The DoOchoooooooooooNuts work or would that confuse people?

I was just driving past that weird wiggly bit you got there at the Eisenhower connector the other day and wondered about it. It’s this weird series of ramps that go to some mysterious area hidden behind huge faceless concrete fortress walls. Like if the gates to Mordor were designed by a stuffy bureaucrat in the 90s. Gonna have to check out what lies behind there some time.

I have always called these the gates to Narnia ;-) You go from crazy Beltway hellishness to birds chirping and deer romping in my lovely neighborhood

That’s my commute route. After surviv…er, passing through the Eisehower Connector (aka “the Lion’s Jaws”) you must zig-zag through the Clermont wall and go up the big hill (aka “The Dirty Name”). From there you meander around the neighborhood until you’re spit out onto Franconia Rd like a sweaty piece of bicycle meat.

    Ha! Yes, very, very hilly.

Thanks all for the tips! I did a circle this weekend and pretty much decided anything involving Holmes Run is probably not worth being ~3 miles less because it took so much longer. Those stream crossings with the bollards are so dumb and then the path under 395 was closed for flooding. It was 1:15 for the ~13 miles there (finally figured out the 4 mile run detour so will likely be a tad quicker next time) and then 1:35 for the ~9 miles back.

Giving this a bump. Group ride coming up this Saturday afternoon (yay, you get to sleep in!) hosted by Team 12 – The Corporation (infiltrators welcome!).

The ride starts at 2 p.m. from the Fair Winds Brewery in Newington (Fairfax).

    Here’s the event info: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=156&day=2017-2-25

Convoy information: If you want to ride together to the start, meet at 12:45 p.m. (wheels roll at 1 p.m.) in the gravel area near the parking lot of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (where the Holmes Run Trail meets Eisenhower Ave). We will use this route to get to the start of the ride: https://www.strava.com/routes/7709275

    See you there!

Since I live by the Eisenhower Connector I may try to ride to the start with you! Though, weather pending, the morning news said a chance of lightning and hail :( I’m good to also do this on Sunday if its junk weather tomorrow at take off.

If you can lead that route I’m in! I’m familiar with the northern Kingstowne-y portion and have biked most of it. The post-Jeff Todd way is what would be new to me, so glad you know of an alternative. Saturday, February 25 @ 2pm?

    Salutations Team 12!

Seeing as how we’re at the halfway point, I fail at following forums, and I have yet to meet any of you – I have an idea for a mid/late February group ride. Really any afternoon in Feb. is open for me except for this Saturday. My running club runs from Fair Winds Brewery in Lorton and I’m familiar with some routes in the area (so this may could for beer pointless prizes I see being gathered).

The proposal is to meet at Fair Winds any of the dates around 2pm (or 12 noon on the 18th since we’re holding a run at 2pm – this actually being ideal for a triathlete brick workout for myself). Their beer is great and there is usually a food truck on site on the weekends.

Route: 40k/25 miler(ish) from the Brewery, down Newington (narrow, not ideal, but should be quiet on a Saturday), bike lanes on Telegraph to Jeff Todd Way (I’m then unfamiliar with Jeff Todd from Pole to Mount Vernon but it’s highlighted as a bike route), then Mount Vernon trail with a turnaround around Collingwood. So, really any distance you’d like, with Collingwood being the 40k turnaround.

    Thoughts?

    Hi all!

I think when I first looked I did not see our thread because it was on a second page of topics (I posted on the Strava club first). I’m good with the team name suggestion! Other than Sausage Party (because the movie was an unfortunate disappointment) and looks like I am the lone chick on Team 12. I think I came across that biking term somewhere… “get chicked” when a gal passes you ;-)

This is my first year riding Freezing Saddles after I bought cold weather gear, listened to my coworker talk about FS all last year while promptly not using any of said cold weather gear. I got into cycling via triathlon and into bike commuting thanks to safe track. I live in Rose Hill Alexandria, aka the “Eisenhower Ave Connector Bike Path” if you’ve been there and commute to Crystal City. So far going 16 days strong, even if it’s just a 1 mile in my neighborhood on the weekend.

Sorry to miss out on the ride on the 13th! I’ll keep an eye out for future events. Anyone here go to the Crystal City Coffee meet up I’m going to try and go to tomorrow?

I’m a big fan of the leg band I got from Crystal City this year with the flashing lights. Something like this.

For a logo what about a bike with snow flakes for wheels?

Morning folks! Regular bike commuter to Crystal City from Alexandria and have been a regular commuter now since spring. Just now seeing there’s a coffee club as I’m new to the forum! Is this still ongoing? Still at the water park or indoors now that it’s starting to get obnoxiously cold-ish? :)

Google calendars are great. Once you make them public anyone can subscribe (ical, html, outlook) and from my experience it syncs well with other calendars out there (to phones too). You can also embed the calendar on a webpage to show the whole thing by month, week, agenda.

Happy to volunteer a bit to set this up. I could then add follow managers to add the events, but I’m not sure how public all of the add event options can be (i.e. anyone to add vs. just managers).

If someone sends me their email address we could test it out.

Sort of a newbie here. Talked all last winter with my co-workers about doing this and then our winter gear sat happily in our closets all winter. So this year, we’re in. Can’t wait until January 1 unless we agree to start earlier :P

Thanks everyone! I just emailed Michelle offering for 2015 so will let you know. My chosen pit stop is Carlyle but I may stop by the others as well for fun.
