Took the trash out last night without my gloves and wound up with a really bad wind burn since it was -17 degrees but -42 with the windchill. It’s -22 degrees here today and -45 with the windchill so schools are closed and everything is pretty much on lockdown. My neighbor (an insane guy that rides his stable of bikes 365 days a year) rode down the block and then quickly turned around and came home after his chain broke. Crazy times.

Wild. I guess you don’t have to worry about rodents getting in your trash.

I’ll give it a go if the gov isn’t shut down. It’s supposed to be sunny. I’ll recharge the battery powered heated gloves tonight.

On Friday I had to lift the bike over the fence and then climb over the fence because the gate latch was frozen.

The wind coming downriver as I crossed the 14th Street Bridge was brutal. I recall muttering something about the wisdom of Rules 5 and 9.

Studded tires kept me upright so the wind could have greater opportunities to abuse me.

Chapeau to you dude. I don’t even like to think what it must have been like on the 14th St. bridge this morning. I’ve commuted across there on mornings when I had to hold on to my hat or the wind would have blown it off of my head, but I’ve never ridden there when it was as cold and windy as it was this morning.

Whoa! Serious cold this morning and the road surface changed every few feet: ice, packed snow, slush, dry. I used gear I haven’t needed in a long time: the battery powered heated gloves, face mask, shoe covers, two jackets, and the wind blocking overpants. I was glad the ride wasn’t any longer than the 3 miles that is was and that it was sunny.

Took this picture Wednesday morning around sunrise standing under the MARC/VRE/Metro/Amtrak tracks that cross over L St NE between 1st and 2nd. It shows the now vacant former site of the Greyhound bus station. The intersection in the distance is 1st and K NE, near Union Station. The view across the vacant lot will soon be filled with a building.

Around 7 A.M. this morning, when it was time to bike to work, it was raining. I’ve got spandex shoe covers but they keep my feet dry for maybe five minutes when it’s raining before I start to feel the water soaking my sock and shoes. This morning I had a breakthrough. After putting on my cycling shoes, I put each foot in one of those thin plastic produce bags from the grocery store. Then I pulled the spandex shoe covers on over the bags–instant waterproof layer. The tops of the bags were secured under the elastic cuffs of the rain pants so my shoes and socks were all waterproofed. Clipping into the pedals punched holes in the thin plastic, but only at the clips. It worked–when I took off the rain gear at the office, my shoes and socks were completely dry.

I think i took their survey. It was pretty long and they sent me a Starbucks card. I’m always happy to advocate for cycling.

Where do you live / where do you ride? What do you ride?

Definitely try to make it to a Friday Morning Coffee Club (FMCC). FMCC II meets in Arlington at the Java Shack between 7 and 9ish

live: ne dc near Gallaudet U
where ride: mostly i ride transportationally, rather than recreationally or competitively, and my commuting, errand, and socializing rides are mostly in dc, though sometimes i’ll do a loop into va and along the river–maybe to the airport
what ride: road bike–all my riding is on pavement and the narrow road handlebars enable me to slip through narrow spaces

    Not an acceptable excuse!

Hard core dude! I find that when the road has snow on it the only exposed pavement is the two tracks where the cars drive, and the space between the moving and the parked cars, where I ride, is covered with snow, and possibly piled with plowed snow.

SW DC is changing slowly, but yeah, the highway spaghetti pile is one big mess over there. It’s unpleasant traveling between the National Mall and the SW Waterfront. Although a lot of changes need to be made, if they could just repurpose one of the buildings in the L’Enfant Plaza area, so that it had more activity outside of regular business hours, it could help to enliven that neighborhood.

Interesting that you mentioned the Mall/Waterfront route. On one of my lunchtime forays on foot, I walked up L’Enfant Plaza to the fountain at the end and there read one of those history walk stations that said the original L’Enfant Plaza plan was for the Plaza to connect the Mall with the river, and that the Plaza would have culturally enriching and recreational resources along its length. No need for a new plan, just implement the original one. Currently the Plaza ends short of the river, with multiple lanes of Maine Ave. and then a hodgepodge of parking lots between the Plaza and the river, and at the Mall end of the Plaza there’s an office building with no street level vendors. Just dreaming, but wouldn’t it be great to have a car free connection between the Mall and the river, connecting to a car free esplanade along the river. Maybe someday … .
