ParticipantI was WAY overdressed for today. It’s almost 50 degrees now, and it’s going to be the coldest day ever tomorrow? What kind of cruel joke is this? (Cuz I ain’t laffin.)

How do you prevent vbrakes from freezing? It already happened to mine and I had no brakes for half my commute.
I thought they were cable operated? I had a similar problem the night I rode home in the snow. I stopped and realized it was just snow that had accumulated and so I tried to brush it off (failed–tough when you’re wet, can’t feel your fingers and barely able to see). Then I decided to bounce my bike and off it fell. I don’t expect any precipitation on the ride home tonight or tomorrow, so I’m not too worried about this.
Just trying to figure out my bug out point. I think I will ride to OT Starbucks, pause for coffee and then continue on. It’s about near the exact middle of my ride making it only two 30 minute segments rather than an hour.

ParticipantBefore I even sat down at my desk, four co-workers asked if I was going to ride in tomorrow. Great, they all think I am even crazier now.

ParticipantTook the trash out last night without my gloves and wound up with a really bad wind burn since it was -17 degrees but -42 with the windchill. It’s -22 degrees here today and -45 with the windchill so schools are closed and everything is pretty much on lockdown. My neighbor (an insane guy that rides his stable of bikes 365 days a year) rode down the block and then quickly turned around and came home after his chain broke. Crazy times.

rcannon100ParticipantIf you lack proper gear and proper experience, DONT RIDE TOMORROW!
I will not be riding tomorrow.
Please dont be silly about this. It is not worth it.

ParticipantWell, even I wouldn’t ride in Minneapolis today or tomorrow…

ParticipantI’ll give it a go if the gov isn’t shut down. It’s supposed to be sunny. I’ll recharge the battery powered heated gloves tonight.
On Friday I had to lift the bike over the fence and then climb over the fence because the gate latch was frozen.

Wild. I guess you don’t have to worry about rodents getting in your trash.

Just in case it’s real bad have stops identified to allow you to do four 15 minute segments.

The gloves are at home and I’m not so I can’t tell you the brand right now but I found them online.

I’ve often heard (never first hand) that one can easily deice frozen pads/rims by squirting ammonia on the pads.

ParticipantI’m not riding tomorrow either. 15 miles into a stiff headwind at 8 degrees is a recipe for a trip to the ER.
