ParticipantLive in Falls Church, work in Ballston, FCN = 9, and I ride so slow I’m afraid folks will poke me with a stick.

ParticipantAwesome.
And I am now truly obsessed with logging rides. As I was reading the article all I could think of was: for the Clif 2 mile challenge – does this count as one ride, six, or 1 per person pedaling (as they cycle through)?

What about a technical t-shirt or polo shirt?
I second this motion – something like the shirts with UPF protection built in. I’m a fan of the LL Bean Timberledge shirts for my commute.
Although I think the jerseys look nice, I consider it an act of kindness to my fellow MUP users to NOT wear jerseys. I’ve said it once, I’ll say it a thousand times – you don’t get a body like this overnight.

ParticipantBy my count from a few minutes ago, only 2500 trips to go to reach the top-off for both BikeWalk KC and LACBC. With 7 days left to go, it’s a reachable goal. I see that LACBC updated their newsletter relling folks about the extension, but BikeWalk KC seems to taking a more passive approach. I guess it’s up to us to make it happen.

ParticipantI wonder if the fact the DC area has so many bike commuters is helping to push us over the top. I’m logging 2x a day during the workweek.
That said, we may hit the 10k mark by mid-month and we’ve already had 3 weekend days and a holiday this month.
In any case – keep riding and logging!

ParticipantNobody asked me, but…
…it’s hard to opine on these types of accidents because each time you pass a jogger/make eye contact with a driver at an intersection/get passed by another rider/etc, the circumstances will be different. In other words, if you’ve passed one pedestrian, you’ve passed one pedestrian…
I find how I analyze whether I will pass, should I bell/call out or both, etc, etc is influenced by the time I spent at sea. I find that the basic foundations of the nautical Nav Rules have good application to biking. Always maintain a proper lookout; maintain a safe speed based on prevailing conditions (weather, traffic, etc); action taken to avoid collisions should be positive, made in ample time and with due regard to the observance of good seamanship; vessel overtaking any other shall keep out of the way of the vessel being overtaken; etc, etc.
Does this mean I’m perfect on the trails? By no means. Sometimes I misjudge and pass when I shouldn’t have, sometimes the call gets caught in my throat on a climb, and sometimes the other person just does something spectacularly crazy. All we can do is our best to try to share the trails and hope everyone else does the same.
Two more parting thoughts on the sea/biking parallel:
(1) A collision at sea will ruin your day.
(2) It’s not speed kills – it’s momentum destroys…aflapr

You should carry a polka dot and a green jersey to present to them during the next stage.

ParticipantGreat ride in this morning – beautiful weather and lots of happy folks on the trails. The Falls Church pit stop was nicely laid out and I appreciated the FCPD blocking off Grove. The Ballston pit-stop was a blast – it was nice to meet Tim and some of the commenters from the forum. Thanks for Tim, acc/Rhinestone Cowgirl, and all the others working and volunteering. I’m in a great mood today – what a day for bike commuting! Looking forward to the PM pitstops on the way home.

ParticipantFYI – one of the new signs on the Custis Trail that was affixed to the I-66 sound barrier just prior to the bridge under North George Mason Drive has fallen off.

Today’s bit of motivation. While riding down the W&OD in Falls Church, I was thinking,
“I do not wish to be associated with a bike that does not go fast, for I intend to pedal into harms way!”
Guess I had my sea-legs on.
Yaaaargh!
