That’s Herr Kapitän Einkaufswagen to you pal.
So we’d have to start patrolling about 4am I guess. Damn that’s early.
Probably earlier

If we split the early morning hours up into shifts we’d nab the guy in a few days. He obviously starts at the airport and goes North to Gravelly Point.
Where does smoky Bob start on his way south? How long has that guy been walking around out there? I think the torn paper and broken glass are the same guy.
I need some LEO contacts around here.
Smokey Bob begins his daily jaunt from someplace within DC. I pass him ~0600 am daily on the DC side of the 14th St bridge. Seriously, you could set your watch to where he is along the trail.
He is not the culprit; I’ve come through as early as 0515 and the glass is already there.

From reading the article, it seems that the author was pretty neutral towards cyclist behavior until it hit home with their mother getting killed by a cyclist. Only after that did the author realize that cyclists can and sometimes do create danger for pedestrians.
It’s like how we cyclists don’t always realize the effects that our decisions can have on other trail-users until we go for a walk/run on a trail. Until one gets passed too closely, sees close calls between aggressive/oblivious cyclists, or sees a crash or its aftermath, it can be difficult to understand the danger to others.
Just like drivers can have a windshield perspective, I think cyclists can have a handlebar perspective.

I’ve actually taken to checking out some of the places that I bike frequently by car, just to get the motorist perspective of intersections and trail crossings. I think it’s helpful, particularly in understanding that some “bad” driver behavior is a influenced by the infrastructure, particularly bad sight lines.

THIS. There were 2 intersections in Alexandria I used to struggle with on a bike–I used to have a ton of close calls on them. I drove through them once or twice while running errands and realized it wasn’t that the drivers were TRYING to hit me, it was that they really had terrible sight lines, and couldn’t see bikes coming until much too close for comfort. Checking this out by car got me to slow wayyy down at those intersections, and gave me a better ability to predict what drivers approaching the intersection would do, and why.
On the other end of the spectrum was when a driver who almost hit me and swore it was because he had no sight lines and couldn’t see me. I went back and drove through the intersection going his route. You could see a few hundred yards in either direction, even from my tiny little Focus. 😡
ALL OF THE ABOVE. I’ve said for years that if you never experience your bike route by car/foot then you can’t really understand what creates any of the poor encounters. It’s not always a jackass behind the wheel. Occasionally you may realize its actually your behavior that needs to change due to the environment/circumstances. I’m certain most drivers would pass cyclists much differently if they spent a few days a year on a bike and suspect more than a few cyclists would change their behavior as well if they understood what they were doing looked like from a driver/ped perspective.

someone who was recently murdered by another person that negligently operated a bicycle
No. Just no. By definition murder requires proof of premeditation and by using it implies a sinister aspect that does not exist. Negligently operating a bicycle is reckless and certainly falls within various definitions of negligence/involuntary manslaughter, however it is not murder. Or do you honestly believe in any way the cyclist intended to kill someone when disregarding the red light?

Idunno! Maybe if you just spent $4-$7k on an e-bike, you might be a little entitled.
Ok, I’ll bite; how is that any different than the person who spent the same amount or more on a road bike?

Since no one has objected, looks like this is the plan (yay ice cream!). Want us to text you when we get to a certain spot so you know when to head out?
I’m certainly ok with a detour for ice cream & planning for it.
Very limited SAG support: my better half will be on standby with my truck in case of non-EMS necessary or major mechanical issues that we can’t solve on the road.
By my last count 8-10 plan on going plus the Steve O intercept on the return.
The weather forecast is looking about perfect for tomorrow. For any last minute questions/concerns, shoot me a PM; otherwise see you all at the Starbucks tomorrow morning!

It was a blast! I love riding in a summer rain and so I took the long way home. I decided to check out the water levels of 4MR since it will be part of my new commute, starting in a month. I expected some flooding, but was surprised by the level of flooding. My preferred commute will include WOD to Shirlington->4MR->Commonwealth Blvd and the trail was flooded in 4 places:
1. WOD under Wilson Blvd. I expected this to be flooded and that was easy to avoid by crossing Wilson Blvd.
2. WOD under Carlin Springs. Water was up above my hubs and was moving. I was able to get through it by walking my bike but wouldn’t try it if the water was higher.
3. 4MR under Glebe Rd. Water was above my knees but not moving. Just walked my bike through that.
4. 4MR under Mt. Vernon. Same as Glebe with water above my knees. Is this flooding to be expected during a typical rainstorm? And is there a way to cross Carlin Springs Rd? Thanks for any advice!
Feom a safety standpoint I highly discourage attempting to proceed through water (whether its moving or not) above your hubs.
From a mechanical standpoint (and forum mechanics please weigh in) submerging your hubs is probably not good for the bearings

ParticipantPlan for Sunday the 30th is same as before only this time the weather is shaping to be very favorable:
Departure Time: 8am
Will depart from the Starbucks at 1200 New Jersey Ave SE, Washington, DC 20590 (located in the northwest corner of the US Department of Transportation Building; catty corner from the Navy Yard Metro Station entrance)
The Nat’s do have a home game on Sunday starting at 1:35pm so please keep that in mind if you plan to drive to the start.
This is the planned route. It’s 86 total miles; anticipate about 4hrs to get there; lunch at historic Middleton Tavern and then 4 hours or so to return and end in front of Bluejacket.
Currently, the forecast calls for temp’s Sunday with a high of 78-80 & 10% or less chance of rain. We will stop as needed for water, fuel stops, etc but please be prepared at the start.
Please reply for a rough headcount and if you PM me, I’ll send you my cell # so you can text me if you’re running a few minutes late, can’t make it, get separated during the ride, etc.
Any questions, please don’t hesitate to shoot me a message and I look forward to seeing everyone Sunday!

ParticipantWith all of these emerging safety devices, don’t forget the world is full of “geniuses” who figure out ways to defeat or otherwise nullify the safety device.
The rolling coal example; the individual has to intentionally change the fuel/air mixture for the engine to do it. It’s not something you can do at a moment’s notice on the fly. Don’t forget, the other “genius” out there in the wild who figured out how to defeat Tesla’ s hands-on-wheel safety feature…ironically with a bike water bottle.

There are parts of that strava route that I’d avoid. I’d consider skipping the stretch of 450 from Race Track Rd to MD-3. Instead, I’d cross the Patuxent river via Governors Bridge Road
The bridge crossing the Patuxent River is currently closed to all traffic on Governors Bridge Road which is why the linked Strava route takes 450.

That’s a plus. I’ve been reporting it every day or two and so far a good portion of the glass I’ve reported hasn’t been cleaned up. I hope they’re able to get more consistent about cleaning it.
Please also keep reporting to the Park Police: 703-285-1000.
The more reporting, the more likely they’ll allocate resources towards investigating/capturing whomever is doing it.
