I’m glad my marathoning days were over by then — pre-dinosaurs, we didn’t have to worry about being chased by anything!
When it comes to sports drinks, I go with Powerade Zero, getting the electrolytes and skipping the sugar.

By the way, in addition to the five-second-rule, there are guidelines for how many bits of roadside gravel may be in any dropped food before it is deemed unfit for consumption.
It’s a lot easier if you just take the bits of gravel out before eating the dropped food.

Reviving this thread to seek recommendations for shoes, specifically shoes for wide-footed sorts like me. Any brands reliably comfy for wide feet?
Lake makes road and MTB shoes in wide sizes. I like the MX101’s.

Nope, those joints in the concrete don’t help at all…

What we really need is coded flags, like they have for shipping. Then you could identify each rider from a distance AND we can pretend we’re all pirates. Some people might want to shorten their handles though.
What about flags for numbers, NATO or ICS? I’d say NATO, since they’re square and would line up horizontally better. (Luckily my forum handle, Twitter, and Gmail are all the same.)

The reason I posted this thread was to get some sympathy over my commute losing its options (no metro, cycling distance), but most everyone is trying to find a way for me to actually still bike!
Well, yeah. I can’t speak for others, but if you’re not riding, bro, how can I blame you for all the mayhem I cause?

The only possibility would be either a mix of drive-then-bike or take metro. Metro would have me taking the Red line in to DC, then Orange out to New Carrolton or MARC, then bike. Metro’s rules about bikes during rush hours kind of kills that option.
Sounds like a reason to buy another bike — one that can be folded up and stuck in a bag.
According to Metro’s web site, there are 16 bike lockers at New Carrollton, so get one and just keep a bike there? (Uh, yeah, this is another “buy another bike reason.”)

The connector trail at Glencarlyn going up to Park St in Arlington Forest was still completely blocked at 7:30 this morning by a large fallen tree.
At 4:00 p.m., today, the tree was gone. There are still lines down across the connector trail, though. I know one is a telephone line, but I did not take the time to inspect them.

ParticipantAs of this afternoon, it’s clear and you can’t tell it was ever blocked.

ParticipantNo change at 3:00 p.m. I didn’t see any NPS crews working anywhere on Columbia Island, so I don’t expect any change today. I’ll probably take my normal route tomorrow morning, so I won’t get a chance to check until I’m heading home.

ParticipantI bagged my early morning ride, which is much of that same loop. The neighborhood streets were littered with branches and I saw a number of trees down, so I just did about 5-6 miles. (I still had to go to IHOP!)
Around 5:15 .m., on S Irving Street, between 5th and 3rd, a tree was down across all but about three or four feet of the street. Power and/or telephone lines were down, too, covering that gap. As I approach 2nd Street, an SUV comes tearing around the corner and I motioned for it to slow down. As he drove by, he greeted me with a “Shut the F* up motherf*er. I shouted there was a tree down. I don’t know if he heard me, but I heard him hitting the brakes. I was tempted to turn around and see if he hit the tree, but I knew I’d start laughing at him and figured I’d just keep going.

I was glad to see the padlock this morning, after thinking about how unpleasant it would be to be doored by a portapotty, and it would probably be an unwelcome shock to the person trying to exit it too.
