That is funny; I *just* ordered a set of Xerxes tires. I didn’t realize Bikenetic carried these or I would have at least attempted to buy them local (I’m guessing local stock on studded tires is probably not great). I’m really excited about how lightweight they are. And the interwebs suggest I can set them up tubeless too.
I riding a set of the similarly-sized Nokian A10 tires, which I’ve had for a few years, but I’m having trouble with them on my Grails rims; the wire bead refuses to seat properly now — staying in the channel at one point in the rim. I’ve tried the recommended tips of soapy water on the beads and pumping it up to higher pressure to get them to pop in, but to no avail. Riding with a flat spot like that on the tire is pretty annoying (mostly noticeable when riding on solid ground/pavement).
Otherwise, I’ve found the 700×32 A10s (measure ~30mm wide) with side studs to be perfect for commuting around here. They obviously don’t do deep snow, but that isn’t a problem I face on my commute.

What is lightweight in this context? 10 pounds or so?

Participant27 tpi model 635 grams/120 tpr model 415 grams vs 1500 grams for the Dillinger 4 33 tpi model or 1275 grams for the 120 tpi model. :p

Ah, I love how the cycling industry talks about weight. I think once you get into the “hundreds of grams” realm, you really gotta start being real and talking in kilos. I mean, 635 grams SOUNDS like nothing, because a gram is practically nothing, but that’s almost 1.5 pounds!

New bike for wet commutes! Jamis Bosanova ordered from last year’s production (THE last year of production) and picked up yesterday from the fine folks at Bikenetic. VERY excited!
This replaces my Trek 7.3FX hybrid, which was my first adult bike, first new bike, and first modern quality bike. Not knowing any better, I rode it a long time without giving it any sort of maintenance, and the bottom bracket corroded to the frame (but didn’t need replacement, so kept on going). After breaking many spokes, I replaced the wheels with a handbuilt pair, but this summer the rims wore out after only 2000 miles of (mostly wet and dirty) commuting. I considered replacing just the wheels, but I decided that because the rim brakes were so hard on the wheels, and the BB would eventually die and be unreplaceable, I would be better off getting a new bike. I took a long time to converge on my choice and pull the trigger, and in the meantime my unfendered (but otherwise well-tended) aluminum road bike took up most of the slack.
Now the Bosanova can take over on days when it’s wet. I won’t ride when roads are icy, so it’ll be a while yet, but that’ll give me time to transfer the accessories over from the hybrid, and eventually transfer my wife’s largely unused rear rack!

It is heavy for a road tire, but so light for a studded tire. My Nokians are almost 900g each for the same size. So these are about half the weight (120tpi of course!). I am also excited about the folding bead and running them tubeless.

Why would you switch to kilos when it’s less than 1?

Yeah I was tempted when I saw them in store (someone else’s order). I have 2x 26″ studded tires and 1x 700c, and I switch my front wheel between bikes as necessary. But it has 240 studs, so is a little overkill for most riding around here. It’s quoted at more than 1.1kg.

I wondered if that was you. I lurk here a lot and overheard your first name in the store, and there can’t be that many Tanias willing to ride on a day that cold.
(Then I got confirmation over the blizzard when I saw a post with your Rove AL–another option I had been considering–and recognized it from the rack.)

Beautiful!
Did you spin them to see how loud they are?
My new 40T Hope Pro 2 Evo hubs *are* significantly quieter than the old Pro 2 Evos just like the internet said, but I’m grateful for the extra engagement points on the MTB (the only place it probably actually adds value).

ParticipantThey’re at the shop and I’m at work so I can only virtually adore them. I’ve got a older Hope set on my Titus (four or five years old now) though so I can do a side by side comparison when the wheels get built (velocity ailerons).
I’m starting to go down the rabbit hole of another wheel build too for the Jamis since it’s a 33# beast . It’s a 27.5+ and there aren’t a lot of options for that right now (plus I need the boost 148 hub) so I’m waiting. The bike has lime green accents though so it’s almost certain I’ll go with the CK green or sour apple boost hubs when they’re released this spring.
