Participant2F coming off the 14th St Bridge. Saw 4-5 cyclists out. Trails (CC Connector, MVT, 14th) in remarkably good shape (less ice from runoff than I expected).
Wind didn’t seem as bad as last Friday. Moose Mitts used for the first time this season. Hands are happy.

ParticipantMy Garmin bottomed out at 2.5. I managed to overdress and was uncomfortably warm for most of the way in….

ParticipantI layered properly and was fine, but ended up trading the road bike for the fixie because the rear hub on the road bike wouldn’t reliably engage in the cold. 😮

ParticipantOverdressed just a bit. My feet were cold, but not any colder than they normally are when temps are in the 20s. My issue was glasses and goggles. They kept fogging up and then the fog would freeze, so visibility was sub-optimal.

May not be an issue as my wife is attempting to pull the “you’re crazy therefore I’m in charge card.” If that occurs, then I will be sadly posting a semi-sleaze ride to ensure Sloppy Seconds gets at least a few points.
Time to exert the married-man corollary to Rule 5.

My rear hub was my biggest concern this morning but it’s my only bike with studds so I took a chance. Luckily I had no issues with the rear hub engaging and proper layering and ski goggles made for a pleasant ride in!

ParticipantMy bike had no trouble with shifting and whatnot. My frozen fingers, however, were not performing with their usual nimbleness.

I really don’t understand the point of a two-hour delay. So it will be -8 instead of -10 degrees?
I imagine the delay is to make sure the school buses start. They don’t get tested often, and you really don’t want to leave kids stranded today.

Ditto. I was too warm. Bring on the negative temps…
Also I saw 10 other bicyclists today! Well done, DC.

Wind chill as low as -15F, and that’s if you’re standing still, not riding a bike.
A few hardy souls might be cycling on Tuesday, but I seriously doubt I’ll be riding outside that morning. If I do any bike-related activity, it will be on a spin bike, preferably while watching one of the good James Bond movies.
I ignore the wind chill number, because as a cyclist, there is always wind chill. We make our own wind. So however you dress for 25 degrees that works, is actually correct for 15 or whatever the wind chill value is for the wind you make.
Because I was commuting e-bound this morning, the wind was at my back–reducing the wind chill number. So it was probably at least zero for me!Actually, I layered one too many, and was sweating on my ride in this morning. If only it had been -7 instead…….

ParticipantI actually got to ride in with my wife this morning, which was nice, though we weren’t as chatty as we might have been in nicer weather. Not many cyclists, but a few.

Which gloves do you have?
I can answer your question this morning. The gloves are from Gerbing’s Heated Clothing Co. (http://www.gerbing.com). They performed well this morning, turned on high. I ordered them online. I only need them on those infrequent days when the temperature is very low. Friday and today were the first times I’ve needed them in three years. If you get them, on days when you use them bring the charger with you so you can charge them for the ride home. And turn them on a few minutes before departure so they’re warm when you leave–it takes a few minutes for them to heat up. Good luck.

ParticipantThat was intense. As I stood inside the house with all the gear on I thought that surely I’d overheat, but I stepped outside and, nope, no overheating this morning. It took almost as long to put the gear on as it took to ride to work. As last Friday, I was glad the ride was no longer than the 3 miles that it was. The saving grace was the wind. While certainly not a still morning, the wind wasn’t too bad, and if it had been stronger, the ride would have been a much uglier animal. I appreciated the dry clear pavement. The sun, amazingly, from 93 million miles away was warming through the cold even less than an hour after sunrise. The battery powered heated gloves, turned on high, performed well, and by the time I got to the office the only cold part was my toes. Usually the shoe covers keep my feet warm, but this degree of cold was defeating them. How warm and welcoming the garage felt. This was one of those mornings when I remind myself to move no farther north.
