Tuesday morning could be coldest day in D.C. in 20 years

Wind chill as low as -15F, and that’s if you’re standing still, not riding a bike.

A few hardy souls might be cycling on Tuesday, but I seriously doubt I’ll be riding outside that morning. If I do any bike-related activity, it will be on a spin bike, preferably while watching one of the good James Bond movies.

Yeah, I saw that. I would think that a Mardi Gras parade would lose its reason for being once Lent had started, but perhaps I’m too much of a traditionalist. (And I actually have no dog in this fight, being Jewish.)

Looks like we’re not going to break the (modern) record of 51 days of subzero weather this winter. Looks like the ice may be melting this week which is perfect since I’ve finally been cleared to resume physical activities. Looks like it’s time to make up for lost mileage.

Preliminary readings indicate that this morning was the coldest ever recorded in March for BWI (4F), since they began keeping records in 1873, 141 years ago.

Dulles tied its March record low of -1F, set in 1993, although their records only go back to 1963.

In any case, that’s cold!

So the casual observer may well ask ” What exactly is the upside of riding to work when it’s 19F outside?” and of course there is perfectly obvious and cogent answer to such a question. There is never a concern that there won’t be room at the bike staples in front of Whole Foods in silver spring.

I also hope this was the final Arctic blast of the winter. There is another storm system this week, but it is now expected to move off to sea and avoid the DC area.

From your mouth to God’s ears! I have in fact managed to bicycle every day of 2014. But I’d really rather be doing it in weather that’s in the 50s.

It was so cold that my mouse wheel seems to have broken. Well, it still works, but only sporadically. I wonder if recent Windows updates are causing the problem. Anyone else having new issues with their mouse scroll wheels no longer working normally?

Finally got the bike out yesterday for a quick test ride to see how bad the ice is here in south MPLS. For 22° degrees the ride wasn’t that bad once I pulled my hood up but daaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn is the ice on the side roads a total bitch. Still, for someone coming off of a really bad leg injury and a two month layoff I handled the ride last night pretty well.
