I just finished throwing on my studded tires about fifteen minutes ago. I was certain that w/in 30 minutes of doing so, OPM would announce closure (Murphy’s Law and all, though I’ll need them the rest of the week regardless of what happens with closures tomorrow it appears), but unless something changes in 15 minutes or so, I guess I’ll be wrong.
I feel a repeat of Snowmageddon coming on. Lots of snow going to come down during the day, and everyone’s going to be stuck trying to get home in the worst of the weather.
They were just messing with you. Closure just announced. Another hour sleep before a sleazly ride to the store for provisions!

Along with scattered salt on the roads.

ParticipantVDOT seemingly ignoring Washington Blvd. Doesn’t bode well for non-county roads when conditions worsen.

ParticipantDo you rich suburbanites think you deserve salted roads, or something?
It looks like the county did treat all the side roads. Besides, I know all the detours around Washington Blvd.

It would appear someone treated the hell out of a short stretch of Glebe between Rt 1 and Potomac this morning. Must be some really rich suburbanites about.

I’m going to get up early (for me) and ride before I send my son to school at 8:30, then drive to work. Then, I’ll turn around and go back and get him from school when it closes, no doubt before I get anything done. As long as I get to ride…!
Thought I’d update: since the kids ended up staying home from school, I left early and rode out to the office, picked up some stuff, demonstrated again to my coworkers the superiority of bike commuting (and cyclists generally), and rode home before the snow even got started. I even got in a couple of extra miles for Team 7. It was a beautiful morning for a ride!

ParticipantOn my ride home last night, I came across a work van that had fishtailed into a ditch, and the towtruck trying to pull it out was blocking both lanes of the road, with a line of cars on both sides waiting for things to clear. I slowly filtered to the front to see how things were going and see if I could squeeze by. The cop supervising turns around, sees me, and the following conversation occurs:
Cop: “Man, you’re crazy!”
Me: “Hey, I’ve got studded tires on this thing, and plus I’m not the one in a ditch”.
Cop: (laughs) “Good point! Go ahead and squeeze by if you want”.I did so, under the jealous gaze of all the motorists waiting in line.

I had a similar conversation near the pentagon last week. The Cops had stopped the connecter road that runs by the power plant for 2 large semi-trucks towing 2 vary large super secret tarp covered concrete piers to stop, turn around and back into the driveway for the powerplant. I filtered up near the front. The cop asked where I was going, and said, just jump over on that sidewalk and go around through the parking lot on the corner. I did and avoided the 5 min backup.

No silent wheel suckers on that setup.
I think those wheels would be about 900 watts per mph OTOH the wood boardwalks and bridges would be fun.

ParticipantGotta ask…What the hell is the deal with Tuesday’s being the coldest day of the week?! This thread is amazingly still spot on every week by title alone. Haha
