ParticipantConditions will remain wet this afternoon, but temperatures will be above freezing (upper 30s, low 40s).
61F tomorrow but more rain. Slight chance of a T-storm in the afternoon. Doesn’t appear to be any more ice or frigid temperatures in the forecast over the next 7 days.

ParticipantI used studded tires this morning, with mixed feelings. They likely were overkill and were terribly slow, but at least I wasn’t worried about falling. I’ll probably curse them all the way home though.

ParticipantToday was a tough call.
Knowing that it would warm up for the afternoon, I originally planned to ride the road bike to the metro, take it on the train (before 7am…although that rule is something we could talk about), go to FCC, ride to the office, and then ride all the way home.
But when I walked outside at 6am it was just too slushy and icy for even a short ride on 23s so I rode the hybrid to the metro but then didn’t really feel like riding it all the way home so I left it there.
I spent a LOT of time last night and this morning thinking about all the various permutations which also included which clothes to wear, what to pack for lunch, how/if to bring in a fresh towel and spare clothes for the office shower, when to shower, etc.
It’s all pretty nuts when you step back and think about the amount of energy spent on determining one day’s commute. But I wouldn’t change a thing! (Except the weather of course.)
Sincerly,

I’m only going Rosslyn to Courthouse tonight, but with my studded tires on the old mtb it’s going to feel like I’m riding a CaBi up Wilson.

ParticipantAnd we thought it was cold here. We thought it was cold in Minnesota too.
What about -100?
These people (along with the Antarctic cyclist) win Freezing Saddles.

ParticipantQuote:Averaging together the different simulations of the GFS model (ensemble), it shows the D.C. area staying below freezing for an incredible 9 straight days – from January 21 to 30 […] The potential for a more severe cold snap exists between around January 26-28. That’s around the time when both the operational GFS and European model show a huge piece of the polar vortex crashing south into Canada with tentacles extending deep into the U.S., not dissimilar to the January 7-8 event.(link)

ParticipantThere is no bad weather just bad gear. (for some reason I tend to have bad gear when it is cold and wet)

ParticipantThis morning’s commute into the wind was the prologue I suspect. I need to go buy some chemical toe warmers ASAP… and I’m not even participating in BAFS!

I saw LL Bean was selling these in 6 (or 12?) packs. I am sure there are closer options too (REI?)

ParticipantHudson Trail Outfitters carries them too. I think some of the other sporting goods stores have them as well, like City Sports.

ParticipantREI had lots of them today, up near the front cash registers at the Baileys Crossroads store.
