I learned about this building from BPAC’s Green Buildings Ride led by komorebi on April 3, 2022.

The new Police Headquarters facility was awarded LEED Gold certification in 2012. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement and leadership.

The building was designed to attain more than 30 percent energy savings due to its improved building envelope, high six efficient glazing, occupancy sensors, and energy-efficient mechanical equipment. Stormwater quality and quantity control are achieved through several bioretention ponds, which allow the water to be filtered before draining slowly into the ground. A 30,000-gallon irrigation tank was also installed to collect the stormwater and reuse it for irrigation. The facility incorporates water-efficient fixtures that reduce water usage by 30 percent. Additionally, more than 90 percent of the waste was diverted from landfill and recycled during construction. In addition to the LEED Gold Certification, the Police Headquarters facility was also chosen by Environmental Design + Construction Magazine as the Excellence in Design Award winner.

You can read more about green buildings in Alexandria here.

At the [Pike & Rose] project’s formation, a goal was set to achieve LEED Neighborhood Development (LEED ND) v2009 certification, with a reach goal of earning Silver. Immense dedication and commitment to sustainable practice by FRIT, Paladino, and the rest of the team allowed Pike & Rose to exceed expectations and earn LEED ND Stage 3 Gold certification.

Pike & Rose is also one of the few developments in the world in which every building is LEED certified. Pike & Rose is the only LEED ND Stage 3 certified project owned and developed by a U.S. REIT and one of only 10 LEED ND Stage 3-certified projects in the U.S. as well as only 18 worldwide. This accomplishment demonstrates the significance that certification can have when aiming to achieve environmental standards across numerous structures with various

2/19/23 Sustainable Sunday, Brentwood Reservoir Ward 5 Community Solar

I stopped by two solar farms tonight. The first powers my neighborhood in Ward 5 and is built on top of an underground DC Water reservoir.

The second was at the end of the Oxon Run Bike Trail.

Edit: The Brentwood farm will be capturing 2.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year. It is one of the largest arrays in DC and will provide energy bill credits to more than 500 income-qualified families through the District’s Solar for All program when complete.

Is it going to be all on road or in the off-road brush pictured? I was just looking at the rail ROWs and both from NE branch and the RR parallel to RI Ave would require expensive bridges.

Looks like they need someone to “clean up” the signage as well.

Lol! Took me awhile to figure out.

    2/20/23 – Manic Monday

On Monday, March 30, 1981, John Hinkley shot President Reagan at the Washington Hilton as the president emerged from his limousine. As a result of the assassination attempt, the Hilton constructed this special enclosed entrance to protect dignitaries when they visit the Hilton.

No bridges. It just runs alongside RI Ave. They are taking away a vehicle lane northbound starting at Armentrout up to the current trail terminus.

    2/20/23: Manic Monday

Whenever I see this vehicle the paint scheme reminds me of the Trapper Keeper I would have had in the 80s. It even has a Golden Girls sticker if you look closely.

I rode to Dowden’s Ordinary in Clarksburg. This is a Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) site. Feel free to read about it here:

    https://www.dar.org/national-society/historic-sites-and-properties/dowdens-ordinary#:~:text=Dowden%E2%80%99s%20Ordinary%20is%20the%20site%20of%20a%20historic,other%20key%20historical%20figures%20during%20the%20Revolutionary%20War.

What does this have to do with Manic Monday, you say?

The upper part of my picture is a sign from the park (which I took on my ride). The lower part of the picture is my ticket to see The Bangles at DAR Constitution Hall along with the CD with Manic Monday on it (this part was not on my ride, but was needed to help explain my wackiness).

Looks like this Presidents Day is a manic Monday for these construction workers. They were working manically when I passed them.
