It appears to me that people spend as much time on the internet doing research to find ‘the perfect picture’ than they do riding! Especially on wet days.

I found this parked in front of the US Capitol Building and assuming that it is from Anchorage AK, then it is 4362 miles away from home [emoji537]

I rode 15 miles in five different parking garages looking at license plates. I found several California plates but nothing farther than that. So I dove back into the rain to get home and stopped 10 feet short of my husband‘s license plate and took a photo. When I got in the house, I consulted my very knowledgeable geographer (Ph.D daughter) and similarly brilliant geologist (son) as well as my local math expert (husband). All art map, globe and atlas geeks. After some discussion about which assumptions to make in their calculations, they all came up with about the same answer. Using the GPS coordinates of my husband’s license plate, if you go around the Earth in a line it is approximately 19,371 miles so therefore, I win!

I do want to say that Reston town Center has an extraordinarily high concentration of vanity license plates. I think the Commonwealth must need to raise the price on those things!

I figured that since diplomatic plates are issued by the State Department here in DC and not the country, they would count the same as a DC plate.

Yeah, I was just hoping to get a decision from the judges in time to go out and look for another one before midnight. But given that we now have Indonesia (among diplomatic plates) and Alaska (among regular ones), I don’t think I could beat that anyway.

You might find Hawaii yet. I have seen that before in DC and once Guam.

Boomer, we don’t live 78 miles from each other. Are you traveling on some crazy back roads?? ;)

So, are we trying to get the farthest away? If so I’m following kbikeva and picking DC around the earth from itself for 19,371 miles. But only her family would know if that varies from location to location. Like what if the line doesn’t include many mountain ranges? Can any location find some line that makes it longer – a diagonal to the equator for instance. If the earth is oblong it would be longer from the poles . . .

According to Furthest City found on google, Perth, Australia is furthest point away that’s not in the middle of the ocean. It’s 18,620 kms from DC, which is 11,569.932 miles away. If we use the 19,371 as pretty close, that means we need only more than 7,801.068 to go around the earth to get to that number. Seems like that would be easy. What do you think?

My errand was to plant the last official Calvin Ball in play, specifically Calvin Ball – Donut Ball (for some reason). I even added a tasty and healthy treat.

This was like 3 years ago, right???!

It is currently hidden at Pierce Mill as pictured in the photo. I put a piece of wood over it to hide it a little better. I’ll also post more photos on my ride that may help you find it.

Calvin Ball decided it wanted a better view and took a little hike. Can you spot its new location?

My sons and dad were real Calvin & Hobbes folk, reading all the books, laughing at their deeds and tricks. The giggles from the bedroom were mischievous so that has always been my impression of C&H. I battled the wind, some rain spritzes and hopped the fence to get under the bridge to nowhere to capture this troll by Mary LaRue Wells, 1990, having just hidden the calvinball in the muck.

The troll on the rope swing captures the visage of Walter Webdale, former head of the Fairfax County Housing Authority and former president of AHC Housing in Arlington, Virginia, who commissioned this work as a way to add amusement to a utilitarian footbridge.

Calvin and Hobbes like to play a lot of different outdoor games. Today’s version of soccer is with the goal in this position.
