Participant2/10/23 – wild card
On 2/10/09 I started daily 15 min radiation therapy to the right side of my chest (where I now carry a potato on rides.) I got radiation x6 weeks, 5 days /week at Georgetown UH – and my awesome radiation onc let me BRING MY BIKE IN [emoji2186][emoji3][emoji445]
I biked to radiation all but 3 days – cuz my son got up in time to catch his bus to high school every day for those 6 weeks except for those 3. He missed his bus MUCH more regularly than that most of the time. (Radiation appts at 8:50, kid due at school by 8:20 – so no time to go back home for the bike.) I felt so supported that he made the effort to drag his ass outta bed a half hour early to support my [emoji2191][emoji2186] habit.
My husband & kids were so supportive when I was going through BC treatment. I think it musta helped them that I biked to chemo & radiation. Helped me too. [emoji2186][emoji2191][emoji177]
I’d already had chemo x6 months, right mastectomy (at the Mayo in Rochester MN – talk about a happy place!) and more chemo. (I[emoji2186][emoji2191]’d with Joan to Obama’s 1st inauguration before my last chemo session. It was very cold and I had no hair, so I brought 5 hats [emoji38].) And wore them all. BTW Joan also biked with me to every single chemo session. (She’s not playing FS this yr but she does usually.)
Radiation was the end of my “active” treatment, & ended on 3/20/09. Then I took a daily pill until 2/20/20 [emoji2358] Justincase anyone noticed I’ve been riding better these last few years…. It had/has a lot to do with Beth Taylor, but I probably wouldn’t have been ready for her challenges before I stopped taking tamoxifen.
Idk how to tag people here, but I’m so grateful for this [emoji2186][emoji1395][emoji2191] community [emoji177]

Benjamin Smith Barton was born Feb 10, 1766. He who wrote the first botanical textbook published in the U.S.- Elements of Botany (1803). He brought together 1,674 specimens of native plants between 1797 and 1807 to form a herbarium that was the largest of the time.
If he went on bike rides, he would probably know what all the plants and flowers are along the trails.

ParticipantWild Card! Show us a photo memorializing something that happened on February 10 in history.
On February 10, 1966, Ralph Nader, a young lawyer and the author of the groundbreaking book “Unsafe at Any Speed: The Designed-In Dangers of the American Automobile,” testifies before Congress for the first time about unsafe practices in the auto industry.
By the mid-1960s, U.S. automakers were still largely unregulated. Nader’s book, which was published in November 1965, accused car companies of designing vehicles with an emphasis on style and power at the expense of consumer safety. One chapter of “Unsafe at Any Speed” focused on handling problems with the Chevrolet Corvair, a car produced by auto giant General Motors (GM). Shortly after Nader’s congressional testimony, the news media reported that Nader had been followed by detectives. It was later determined that starting in early February 1966, GM sent investigators to spy on Nader and look into his personal life in an effort to discredit him. Nader sued GM for harassment and invasion of privacy and won a settlement. The publicity surrounding GM’s actions helped make “Unsafe at Any Speed” a best-seller and turn Ralph Nader into a household name.

Participant2/11/23 “Pointless” Kids – kids on bikes!
Great timing here, since I just learned about this one at the Salt Dome on Thursday. And just persuaded Google maps to put it in the right location, instead of two blocks away, yesterday.Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk

Participant2/11 kids on bikes
So we saw this father and son riding the opposite way, but I didn’t want to stop and ended up getting a clear shot of the younger’s face, so I had to photoshop another kid’s face on top.

I thought for sure we wouldn’t be able to find kids out riding bikes in the dessert on our early morning ride, but found a few playing around in a sports park parking lot!

Participant2/11 – Kids on Bikes
Like others, I did not expect to find many kids on bikes today. I headed over to the local elementary school figuring I’d go for a contextual photo and managed to also find some kids practicing riding in the parking lot in the distance.
Otherwise, this was going to be “bike racks that are filled with kid’s bikes during the warmer months of the school year.”

Participant2/11/23 Kids on bikes
I thought I had my photo, but I got a late afternoon plea from a grandma who wanted to give her grandson the opportunity to learn while she had him for the weekend. Family circumstances the kid comes from aren’t good so grandma went and bought him a bike, bought him a helmet, and brought him to me. The kid was a natural and within 30 minutes he was riding. This is the moment when he really “got it.”
