In Arlington, there are many McMansions, and they take up nearly the entire lot, and virtually no front, side, or back yard. These houses hog the ground, hence, they are groundhogs.

Scavhunt. Ground Hog Day 2/2/23

I’ve seen this spot again and again while ground hog daying, pardon me, HAMSTERING at Hains Point. It’s the movie!

Bethesda Elementary School has three different styles of bird feeders on one tree. (There is a fourth on a neighboring tree, but I couldn’t get it into the picture.)

It wasn’t so easy for me. I was headed to the Bethesda Philz, only to learn that it had closed. At 11:30 pm, I had to use my imagination and act quickly to get my groundhog (or as it turned out, a grounded hog) in before midnight.

I remember this Alexandria park having a bird house…but when I got there I was pleasantly surprise at how many bird feeders and houses it had!! Look carefully cause they are hanging all in the trees too!

2/3/23 Feed the Birds

With this wind, I looked for Mary Poppins, hoping she would sing one of my favorite childhood songs, “Feed the birds, tuppence a bag.” Alas, no MP. But I found these gorgeous birds painted on a wall of a garage in Bethesda. They are ego-birds, fed by the admiration of all who see them.

This arrangement at Walker Nature Center in Reston (made by Julie, my talented friend and Nature Center volunteer) includes artificial berries of the kind that birds love. Julie had to stop using branches with real berries in her arrangements because the birds devoured them!

Well, I heard, actually, that Mary Poppins’s umbrella flight was grounded today due to the wind. Luckily birds such as this red-bellied woodpecker are able to find their meal elsewhere.
