    1/26/2023 – Vietnam War
The woman who owns Hair Nail Care (11130 South Lakes Dr G, in Reston), and has done an excellent job cutting my hair for many years, is Vietnamese. Her family emigrated from Vietnam to the US at the end of the Vietnam war.

I think MTansill‘s photo for prohibition might just be the BEST photo of all Freezing Saddles this year! I’ve continued to chuckle about it when I ride, trying to think up something funny!

Aww.. thanks! I loved that you had mushrooms for your popcorn entry!

The Vietnam Women’s Memorial was established to honor the women who risked their lives to serve their country. The memorial was dedicated in 1993 and portrays three women caring for a fallen soldier. The names of the eight women who died in Vietnam are included on the list of over 58,000 names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Phở restaurants have long had numbers in their names, which originally came from their street addresses. In the US, they often refer to significant dates. My favorite place for phở was named for the year its founder fled Vietnam when Saigon fell.

This plaque on the Leesburg County Courthouse grounds marks a Vietnam Memorial time capsule that was buried on Veterans Day 1988. The time capsule is to be opened on Veterans Day 2088.25a7faae777600a26fca4e2b06183e09.jpg

I need to head out there again some day. I was just watching Adam Savage’s video on the “restoration” of the Star Wars X-Fighter. Not sure if it’s displayed yet. The hardest part was figuring out what kind of reinforcement it might need to hang it, since the prop was made just for the ground.

The SR-71 was a surveillance workhorse during the Vietnam conflict. This beautiful airplane is elegantly retired at Udvar-Hazy. Did you know that you can bike from the Reston area Metro stops? Hit me up if you want the route.

When the Vietnam War ended, these Swift Boats came back to the U.S.

The U.S. Navy employed Patrol Craft Fast (PCF) or Swift Boats in its coastal river operations of the Vietnam War. From 1965 to 1972, Swift Boats based all along the coast of the Republic of Vietnam searched for North Vietnamese steel-hulled ships, junks and other craft attempting to deliver arms and munitions to enemy forces ashore.

You probably passed these boats when you ride on the River Walk near the Navy Yard, they have markers talking about the importance of these boats and a dedication to the Swift Boat Sailors who died during the Vietnam War, the youngest was 18 years old.

took a page from somebody else – without the many Vietnamese folks coming here after the way, we wouldn’t have such wonderful Vietnamese food.

1/26/23-50 years after Paris Peace Accords signed. End of Vietnam War-well, for the US-numbers-’73, 11, 21; 1/26/1973 was the sign date, 11 hours before was last US soldier killed in action there; 21 was average age of US soldiers in Vietnam; if born after 1/1955, you were 18 late enough to avoid being drafted for Vietnam.
