Right after his assassInation in 1968, efforts began to create a Federal Holiday in his memory. It took until Reagan signed it into being in 1983 with first celebration of the holiday in 1986. Next year, the Monday Holiday will fall on his actual bday Jan 15.

    01/16/23 – something MLK

I rode in today’s MLK Memorial Ride organized by a slew of local DMV cycling clubs led by the District Cycling Collective & Getting It In that visited the Memorial, MLK Library & the Parade on MLK Blvd. However it was this evening’s show at the Kennedy that moved my spirit, and not only because I rode an e-CaBi to get there!

    1/17/2023 Prohibition
Montgomery County still has its own form of Prohibition. The wine and beer store on the left exists only because the supermarket on the right is not permitted to sell alcohol. And even the wine and beer store is not permitted to sell liquor; that can be sold only by the county.

Amusingly, private parties are allowed to sell marijuana for medicinal purposes now, and will soon be allowed to sell it for recreational purposes.

    1/17/23: Prohibition Begins

The Temperance Fountain was donated to DC in 1882 by Dr. Henry Cogswell, a crusader in the temperance movement. He believed that access to cool drinking water would keep people from consuming alcohol.

The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union was one of the driving forces behind the ratification of the 18th Amendment.
