“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love”

Rushing to catch-up with the SteveO BAFS train from Lazy Mikes, Nadine, Jessie, and I rode by the volunteers doing W&OD clean-up south of Columbia Pike. A tip of the helmet to all of you who gave so freely!
Once we got to the memorial, it was great to see so many others visitng!

I went to Steve’s MLK ride – and wow there were so many people at the MLK memorial I decided to take a side view of the MLK statue with the crowds & the beautiful sky.
Some of our group & their bikes are visible to the right. That’s Drevil on the bottom right.
MLK has always been a hero of mine – that dream of his [emoji177][emoji2956][emoji1377][emoji3059]
And now his day has an additional meaning for me….8 years ago today my husband brought me my mom. She had pancreatic cancer & I’d discovered at Christmas that she’d been falling, so we’d decided she’d move in with us. So Alan went to Cambridge MA on MLK weekend 2015, organized her move with the help of a bunch of her friends and our MA friends and brought her here on MLK day.
I can still see him wheeling her to me at the airport, her smile busting off her face…. Best present ever [emoji177]

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Martin Luther King Jr. delivered this famous line in a sermon called “Loving Your Enemies,” at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, on November 17, 1957

A day of service, friends of the W&OD participated in BikeArlington’s cleanup from Columbia Pike east. Over 100 folks checked in and gathered over 100 bags of trash. Heavy lift!

College Park hosts an event to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. I wish that I could have gotten a shot of something more meaningful, but did spend my ride thinking about his legacy.

We visited this location on the MLK ride today.
At one time this wall of the Mellon Convenience store at the corner of Malcolm X Ave. and MLK Jr. Ave. SE displayed a mural titled “I Have a Dream.”After it was defaced with graffiti it was covered over. It’s unclear if it will be repainted.

Here’s a link to what the mural looked like: https://wamu.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/MLK-e1476299622150.jpg

I too went on Steve O’s excellent ride. After the memorial we went to find a mural as noted above, but instead found a parade. I did not even know there was an MLK day parade in DC. It was very festive. Worth it, though the search for wormholes around the parade was interesting.

I have slim pickings around here (but churches up the wazoo), so I hope the judges are lenient.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist minister.

Here is a 3-photo collage. I had to go out of town today, so squeezed my ride in early around town in Arlington. HOWEVER, my short ride brought me past the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington, which had an exhibit about lunch counters – specifically one at the People’s Drug Store, which was the site of a sit-in during the Civil Rights Era (photo 1 in the collage)
I then stopped by the library, to snap the pic of the sign (2nd pic of collage), stating that it was CLOSED today for the MLK holiday (it was designated as a holiday 40 years ago.)
The third photo in the collage wasn’t found on my ride, but I wanted to include it anyway, since it shows my grandfather (Attorney Merle McCurdy) in the center, flanked by Ralph Abernathy on the left, and Martin Luther King on the right, where my grandfather addressed the NAACP convention in Atlanta, GA on July 3, 1962.
Here’s the link for an article on the sit-in at People’s Drug store on Lee Hwy in Arlington – https://www.arlnow.com/2020/06/09/sixty-years-ago-today-a-month-long-civil-rights-battle-raged-across-arlington-restaurants/#:~:text=%E2%80%9COn%20June%209%2C%201960%2C,only%20lunch%20counters%2C%E2%80%9D%20Arlington’s%20Historic

Can’t believe I forgot to post this here last night….. I met a woman with a dog named Charlie! On the w&od.
Too late, Charlie. Sorry!
Rule 3. For the main competition, it has to be posted in the Forum on the day for which it was requested.
But your photo composition is so good, Nadine!
