The Lockkeeper’s House, built in the 1830s, is the oldest structure onThe National Mall, and was the terminus of a water canal that connected eastward down today’s Constitution Ave to the Anacostia River

Boomer, you are not alone who had problems uploading photos last night. Therefore, as a single-time exception, I downloaded your photo from your Strava and uploaded it here.
Great story, by the way. I always wondered what that little house on the Mall was.

    LGRides, Boomer2U, and rumipumi,

I see you cannot upload your photos. Please, try again before midnight. If that does not work, leave a message in this thread. I will make an exception and count your Strava photos.

I finally got a photo added, but it was after midnight. It is in my Strava activity as well. Tapatalk would not cooperate.

In 1922, Adele H. Stamp, educator and community leader, was offered a one-year contract as the Dean of Women at the University of Maryland. At the end of that year, her contract was renewed, even though she had promised to take a position with the Red Cross. By the end of two years, she knew that she wanted this to be her life’s work. For the next 38 years until her retirement in 1960, she served as the University’s Dean of Women.

While she was there, enrollment of female students increased from 93 in 1922 to approximately 4,000 in 1960.

Stamp Student Union is now the Student Union building which is considered the main hub of campus, was renamed after her in 1983.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic arrived and suddenly life got more… socially distanced. Franklin’s in Hyattsville, MD had the best response. Introducing the Quarantiki Room! Complete with sand and thematic music.87ffeb9428d6e6cdfc4491b1ede9f3fb.jpg

The last in my series within the series — TOYS

The best toy EVER of ALL TIME was finally designed and marketed specifically for kids in the 1920’s. This mural in Leesburg is a great way to see a throwback to the earlier designs. On a side note, if you’d like to see this mural (and the other public art in Leesburg), none of it is far from the W&OD. This one is in the north end of the Town Garage (Market St entry). If you’d like a route to see the Leesburg art, contact me at westenhoff at gmail and I’ll send it to you. Heck, if you want some routes for Reston for the same thing (way more public art here), ask me for those as well!

#scavhunt “the 20s”. I took this photo from outside of Beckmann Place Antiques on the W&OD in Vienna. These vases look inspired by the Art Deco movement of the 1920s.

    1/12/23 The 30’s

Serdar told me to post this retroactively because of all the problems with the connections to the forum yesterday. I was just trying to amuse him, but maybe it will amuse someone else.

In the theme of “TOYS” (my theme within the theme), the 30’s were a big time for children, particularly boys, to enjoy model railroading. We even have a set in our basement from my father in law’s childhood.

So in a shameless ploy to amuse Serdar, I went to his favorite location on the W&OD to imitate his famous recurring photo. I had to wrangle a couple of nearby teenage boys to take the photo. That in itself was a hoot. “What’s a scavenger hunt?”
