Good shot! It looks like a screenshot from a Halloween movie.

This is St Mary of Sorrows Historic Church in Fairfax Station. The cornerstone for the church was placed in 1858 and the church was dedicated in 1860. The cemetery is actually older than the church. Land for the church and cemetery was donated to the Richmond Diocese in 1838 and they created the cemetery at that time.

Will it still count if the words are in the wrong order?

Didn’t want to tempt fate at the front gate of Ft A.P. Hill near Bowling Green, VA.

World War heroes rest in Alexandria National Cemetery

Serdar, did you know that the criteria for eligibility for burial in a National Cemetery in the US is being a military veteran or spouse of military veteran? The only exception is there in the Alexandria National Cemetery where 4 civilians who died while trying to catch John Wilkes Booth are buried. If I remember correctly, they drowned in the Potomac. It’s a significant enough exception that it really stuck in my mind when I learned it. It speaks to the fervor in the aftermath of Lincoln’s death. Nice photo, too!

Fort Willard, located south of Alexandria on a hill, was the southernmost of 68 forts constructed around Washington DC during the Civil War. It was constructed in 1862 and was named in honor of Colonel George Willard, who had been killed at Gettysburg on July 26, 1863.

Fort Scott was a detached lunette constructed in May 1861 to guard the south flank of the defenses of Washington during the American Civil War. It was named for General Winfield Scott, who was then General-in-Chief of the Union Army. An historic marker[1] and a small remnant of the fort are the only evidence of the site of the fort on the grounds of what is now Fort Scott Park in Arlington County, Virginia.

Fort Taylor Park (Falls Church, VA)
To access this park, there are stairs to climb and a wood-chipped trail. This is the location of the first aerial reconnaissance flight in the United States. It occurred in 1861 by balloonist Thaddeuss Lowe.

I mean I live in friggin Fort Ward Heights, right? I’ve climbed that hill, on bike or on foot, a thousand times. I’ve stood at the entrance collecting signatures for a road diet.
Way back in the 90s we held birthday parties for POTM at the playground there. Of course this is my entry.

Ladies and gentlemen. Fort Ward, Alexandria, Virginia.

This is the modern day hill fort equivalent in El Paso. High on a hill, the base of which is guarded by a manned gate, with its own water supply, etc. Not sure who they’re protecting themselves from, but as a member of the hoi polloi, I was suitably impressed.
