    Rules:

    This year we have two competitions: a main competition and participation prizes! You can compete in both simultaneously or just one.

    Detailed rules are below:

    1. Obvs, you should be a participant in Freezing Saddles ’22
    2. It has to be on a bike ride on the day it was requested
    3. For the main competition, it has to be posted in the Forum on the day for which it was requested, i.e., 12:01 AM EST to 11:59 PM EST for the day it was requested. Sorry, we won’t count ones that aren’t posted for the day it was requested. That’s part of the challenge
    4. The reason we say “for the day it is requested” is because we will release a weekly list of scavenger hunt items ahead of time, with one item for each day — but don’t take and/or post the pic until that day comes.
    5. The Scavenger Hunt calendar will be updated weekly here: (https://tinyurl.com/2022scavhunt) Each (Saturday-Friday) week of items will have a common theme. We will always update it in advance of the week ahead so you have time to make plans!
    6. Your Forum post must be titled with the date and the found object/theme. Example: IF the item for January 1st was “borscht”, you would title your Forum post: 1/1/2022 borscht
    7. Description, short backstory or location are optional (but nice). That said, if your pic is abstract or not obviously relatable to my request, please explain (e.g., I ask for “happiness”, and you post a pic of a tennis ball you found on a ride, please explain how that tennis ball = happiness)
    8. It has to be a picture you took. You don’t need to be in the photo, but if you are in it, it either has to be a selfie or done with a self-timer
    9. Only one pic/day should be posted in the Forum. Please don’t pad by adding more than one pic/day. (You can include as many photos as you want on your strava ride.)
    10. It has to be a picture, not a video
    11. Let’s stick to things you find out there during your ride, and not things that you bring or make yourself (unless otherwise specified). Example 1: if I say find “2022”, don’t scratch it into dirt. Example 2: if I say find a flower, don’t bring a flower with you on your ride and take a pic of that. This kinda takes the fun out of looking for things, which is the whole point.
    12. Unless specified otherwise, your bike does not have to be in the photo.
    13. Found item needs to be clear and discernible (or legible if text) in the picture. If you are using Tapatalk and are having trouble posting pics that are large enough, let us know and I/we can try to help you with it.
    14. Filters are OK, but no obvious/blatant photoshopping… not that we would know anything about such things

    Scoring

    Scoring will be different for FS22 and there are two different prizes you are competing for simultaneously:

    • Main Competition: To compete in this prize you must post in this Forum ( http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?18934-Pointless-Prize-2022-Photo-Scavenger-Hunt ) complying with the rules above. Scoring will be arbitrary and capricious, and only one person per day is guaranteed to get a point each day. Hopefully this will cut down on some of the back-end work. How will you be the lucky point-winner for the day? Impress us with your creativity. Since we are publishing an entire week at a time, it should give you some time to come up with a creative idea. The rider with the most Main Competition points at the end of the competition is the… winner of the Main Competition.
    • Participation Winners: There will also be participation awards for the top tier of daily participants. Tag one ride each day with #scavhunt, add your photo(s) of the item, and watch this leaderboard https://freezingsaddles.org/pointless/hashtag/scavhunt . This will be scored automatically by the leaderboard itself (one point per daily #scavhunt ride), is honor-based. Please do not tag more than one ride per day with the hashtag. Anyone in the top 10% of the leaderboard (based on number of rides, not mileage!!) at the end of Freezing Saddles will get a special prize!

    Good Luck! Millie and Rumi

    Wide angle shot to fit everything in. I got lucky when an “Indigo” Blue VW Golf pulled into the parking lot in front of the “Wine”ry. My “Bike” is in the foreground and Honey B’s Macarons is an “Independent Bakery”, whose sign you can see on the right.

    Those 4 items are accompanied by a yellow fire hydrant way in the far left distance (guessing maybe it will look like a yellow dot at best when uploaded :) The bonnet (top) of the hydrant is “oblate spheroid” shaped (with a locking nut on very top), but it’s only half a spheroid. I’m guessing it doesn’t count, since it’s only half, but wanted to share.

    A fun way to end my ride and Freezing Saddles 2022!

    3/19/2022 Bonus Day

    [ATTACH=CONFIG]28998[/ATTACH]

    – oblate spheroid: the Earth
    – flowering tree: sidewalk tree across the street from CVS
    – crosswalk: front and center
    – moon: above Long and Foster, right hand side
    – chemistry: it’s a pharmacy and pharmaceuticals involve lots of chemistry
    – indigo: where the streetlights blur into the sky turns indigo
    – art deco architecture: this former movie theater turned CVS is a quintessential art deco style building designed by John Jacob Zink, opened in 1937
    – bicycle: see the CaBi bikes to the left of the CVS entryway
    – independent bakery: before the green neon lit cannabis shop to the left of CVS moved in, this was the short-lived site of an actual awesome independent bakery; however, since people stop by the cannabis shop before “getting baked,” isn’t it a “bakery” of another stripe?

    Oblate Spheroid (Nadine is bringing attention to one!)
    Flowering Tree (Nadine’s Jersey)
    Moon (It’s up there, you just can’t see it directly, but the light it reflects is totally obvious, so MOON.) (And I forgot everything had to be in one picture lol!)
    Indigo (The petal near Nadine’s hand (somewhat blurry here, but check Strava), actually, Sam’s shirt may have some too, street lights and sky, lights mixed with violet in the foreground)

    Art Deco (Maybe the bike I’m holding is old enough to be Art Deco. . . )
    Bicycle
    Wine (Sam)

    3/20 – bonus day

    Oblate spheroid – the street lamps surrounding Dupont Circle are spheroid

    Flowering Tree – there’s a flowering tree in front of the Dupont Circle Hotel

    Wine – in the left corner of the hotel there is a lounge where probably lots of people inside are imbibing on wine

    St Patrick’s Day – the lights are green for St Patrick’s Day

    Crosswalk – a crosswalk in front of the hotel

    Embassy – to the right of the hotel is the Jamaican Embassy which unfortunately isn’t lit up

    Bike – a bike in the foreground

    Had to do a pano shot to get everything in one photo:
    1) oblate spheroid (the two fake balloons in front of McDonald’s on left side on photo: 2) bicycle (mine in the median of Langston Blvd Arlington), 3) crosswalk (Zoom in, it is under the traffic lights); 4) Independent bakery (Heidelberg Bakery, an Arlington institution) is in about the center of the photo near the traffic lights; 5) indigo (either the trash and recycle bins on left side of street or the car on the right side of the photo); 6) chemistry (must be taught in Langston High School on the left side of the picture); 7) flowering trees (the ones in the foreground are not blooming but there is one in the distance on the left side of the street); with stretches Embassy, wine, St Patrick’s Day, moon, Art Deco (Rule #7) explain if the “pic is …not easily relatable” to the requested item.
    8) Embassy-the flags flying in front of McDonalds remind me of an American embassy and McDonalds is a safe place for many Americans abroad;
    9) Wine-the man crossing the street looks like he is carrying a bottle of wine, or he is looking for a bottle;
    10) St Patrick’s Day-I associate SPD with spring bc i grew up in the South. All of the flowers popping out and bushes turning green remind me that SPD was this week;
    11) Moon-the moon is always out there even when we cannot see it
    12) Art Deco-while on my “cool house” ride yesterday for scavhunt, i saw an Art Deco style apartment building (okay, that’s too big of a stretch)

    Well, if all bikingjenn’s get accepted, I may have to reanalyze mine for more possibilities. But for now:

    Wine = Potomac Wine and Spirits. (You may have to enlarge to see the sign, but it’s just to the right of the street.)
    Moon (obvious)
    Crosswalk (obvious)
    Bike (on the left side of Potomac Wine and Spirits)
    Oblate spheroid = the earth, which is an oblate sphere. (Okay, I’ll understand if this gets disallowed.)

    Impressive bonus day submissions! Thanks a million to Rumi and Millie for this incredibly fun, interesting, and inspiring game! Not only did it motivate me to get out and ride on the worst winter days, but I learned a surprising amount both from researching some of the daily challenges, and from everyone’s posts. Looking forward to BAFS2023! Ride on, FS friends! [emoji2190][emoji1338][emoji2192][emoji1566][emoji2191][emoji2188]

    3-19-22 – bonus!

    Aw man, I read the directions wrong – I thought it said to post to EITHER Strava or Forum, so technically, I’m a day late. DARN! But here is the text copied from my Strava list for your enjoyment:

    “#scavhunt BONUS! OK, you have to stretch the creative imagination here, but I’ve got SIX items here. First, the easy ones. 1) bike. 2) wine (in Sam’s hand). 3) crosswalk – Nadine is standing in it. The other three are harder. 4) moon – you can barely see the moon in the photo, and the clouds were covering part of it, and of course, the photo doesn’t do it justice, but it’s just above Nadine’s head through the tree branches. 5) flowering trees. You’ll just have to take my word for it because the spot where we were on Hains Point was surrounded by flowering trees and they ARE in the background. 6) Ovate spheroid. Nadine generously volunteered to squash her ‘middle-aged’ boob for that one. Thank you Nadine! Oh wait – could there even be a bit of INDIGO? Would that make SEVEN???”

    Cate, I think you are not late. The final submission can be done today. Here is a quote, “Good news: You will have until the end of 20 MARCH to submit your final photo in the forum.”
