He championed the theory of heliocentrism (Earth rotating daily and revolving around the sun) to a skeptical Inquisition and suffered because of that. I’ll celebrate that with a drink at the Orbit Room

Beyond the tree line on Navy Hill is the original site of the U.S. Naval Observatory (1844-1893). The observatory building still stands, but the public can’t access the site.

Galileo’s contributions to observational astronomy include the telescopic confirmation of the phases of Venus.February 9, 2022 at 11:22 pm #1118992Sophie CW
Participant2/9/2022 – Galileo was the first to use a telescope to see the mountains and craters on the moon as well as the Milk Way.

This public art piece is called “Celeste: Spirit of Discovery” by Ali Mirsky and had a great telescope.February 9, 2022 at 11:23 pm #1118993AlanA

Galileo studied speed, velocity, gravity and inertia. These were all an important part of my ride along the rolling hills on this road as the trucks were whizzing by me.

When I was in high school I wrote a research paper on Galileo’s life and troubles with the Inquisition. I gave it the title, Eppur Si Muove, which he supposedly uttered quietly after submitting to the dictates of the Church at the time. Researching for the paper taught me that sometimes one has to concede a battle in order to continue to fight the war. He never gave up his ideas or ideals and some say he never gave up his sorrow over how his own church refused to see truth.
So in spirit of Galileo’s struggles, I give you St. Stephen & Deacon Martyr Catholic Church.

Galileo studied the Sun and the Moon and used his findings to defend the concept heliocentrism. Heliocentrism is the belief that the Sun is the center of the universe and that Earth moved around the Sun.

Galileo was a big astronomer – so I took a pic of the planetarium at Washington Liberty High, the great school my kids went to – though its name has improved since they graduated. (Now why didn’t I think of it 2 days ago….? [emoji2358][emoji1744])

Galileo liked looking through telescopes, so here is a telescope!

Because his work on the telescope paved the way to celestial observations, here is a view of some stars.

My fall back plan was to photograph something indigo colored in homage to the Indigo Girls’ song “Galileo” stuck in my head as I rode today.February 10, 2022 at 2:44 am #1119014karenbikes2@gmail.com

Why am I submitting a photo of a Catholic Church for today’s Galileo challenge? Galileo’s championing of Copernican heliocentrism (Earth rotating daily and revolving around the sun) was met with opposition from within the Catholic Church and from some astronomers. The matter was investigated by the Roman Inquisition in 1615, which concluded that heliocentrism was foolish, absurd, and heretical since it contradicted Holy Scripture. Galileo was ultimately tried by the Inquisition, found “vehemently suspect of heresy”, and forced to recant. He spent the rest of his life under house arrest.

The man advanced science, so I headed to a science supply store, and, surprise, surprise, I found a telescope.

He made his discoveries by observing the moon, among other celestial bodies.(I was lucky to get this one, because it was covered in clouds moments later.)
