    Boomer, are those Buddhist monks?

No, they did not appear to Buddhist monks of the Tibetan or SE Asian sects that I am familiar with, but rather maybe Shakta (Hindu) monks as they all wore the mark of the tilaka and had head/ facial hair… though I did not ask and am not sure. How can you tell the difference?

    2/1/2022 Lunar New Year

The day established for the Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year, is based on the cycles of the Moon. The Chinese calendar defines the lunar month containing the winter solstice as the eleventh month, meaning that Chinese New Year usually falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice.

    2/1 Lunar New Year

In researching this I discovered that up until the 1940’s there was a quite a large Chinese community in El Paso. There was even a distinctive “Chinatown” for many years, with people on both sides of the border taking advantage of the fresh produce and other uniquely Chinese traditional medicines. But the community dispersed and any Chinese or other Asian residents here seem to be just part of the neighborhoods they live in – not standing out in any way.

As a result, there is a dearth of Lunar New Year celebration or imagery here in west Texas. So I rode to the best reviewed Chinese food place thinking they’d be putting on something special. Not.even.a.banner! The food was good though, so I call it “mission accomplished.”

    2-1 Lunar New Year

Mother nature was nice enough to not start snowing until after today’s ride (no such luck next couple days). Found a neighborhood with Tiger themed roads. My favorite was the intersection of Tiger Walk & Tiger Walk, but for this photo I’ll share Tiger Run. Funny that it’s letting you know you’ll end up dead in the end if you try to outrun the Tiger.

    2/1/2022 – Lunar New Year

I tried real hard to find a Tiger in Columbia, Marietta, Maytown, and N York, PA without luck. went by a Chinese restaurant in Columbia, but their exterior decorations were for Valentines day. No Exxon stations, but some Turkey Hills. I’m submitting my plate of drunken noodles at the District Thai Restaurant on N George St in N York as my Lunar New Year celebration.

I got the Lunar New Year special at Chiko in Bethesda. The receipt just says “LNY,” so I took a photo of the whole meal, just to be sure.
