Participant3/15/2022 – Mid-century modern

Large windows and interior design based on functionality characterize Mid-century modern architecture. Unfortunately, we can’t see the interior of this house. However, I believe it’s functional.March 16, 2022 at 3:15 am #1121108Nadine

Brookland’s Church of the Redeemer Presbyterian was designed by Robert Madison, the first licensed Black architect in Ohio who moved to DC to teach at Howard University. He designed a number of buildings in the area, which I learned about in this Washingtonian article, “Stop Tearing Down Midcentury-Modern Houses!” https://www.washingtonian.com/2021/10/28/stop-tearing-down-midcentury-modern-houses/
I can’t wait to ride the neighborhood and see them better in daylight!

Yeah I saw some great ones there on Sunday & took pix…. But it was brutalist day. I was tempted to post one here today anyhow and forego the participation point (cuz wrong day) just cuz they’re so clearly mid-century modern

Our friend Dave has a absolutely stunning house that is normally completely secluded within their wooded lot. Their house was custom-built to complement these woods and both reflect and look out upon the beauty, a key component of the Arts and Crafts movement. Dave also happens to be a master Azalea gardener and visiting when the blooms are at their peak is simply out of this world.
Dave is also an all-around good guy and tonight I had a great excuse to sit down for a beer with him!

If you’d had a Gaudi day I’d have flown to Spain to bike to Barcelona!

We actually DO have a prominent architect from the Prairie School of Arts & Crafts architecture who lived and worked here in El Paso. I biked over to his house today (why must it always be uphill?) to take this photo. If you want to learn more about Henry C. Trost, you can check out this website: https://www.henrytrost.org/
