ParticipantAt the beginning of my ride. I included my neighbor on the left because it has three colors. Mine is basically two, unless you count the whites probably being slightly different. I think the official definition is three or more colors, but I don’t know if every definition follows that format.
“In American architecture, painted ladies are Victorian and Edwardian houses and buildings repainted, starting in the 1960s, in three or more colors that embellish or enhance their architectural details.”
-Wikipedia
Richardson Place NW
Ha! Mine has three colors if you count where the removed ivy peeled the paint away!

This Painted Lady has been on the Greater Brookland Garden Club’s House and Garden Tour. The bright colors were chosen with the help of a local artist in homage of the owner’s Southwestern heritage. The full house is my highlighted Strava photo.

Well, here in the desert southwest we don’t have a lot of “painted lady” type homes you might be used to. But we have a lot of ladies painted on walls and walls are part of architecture.
So once I decided I was going that route, I had the terrible job of choosing. But I decided to go with Milicent Patrick because she is painted on this wall and she herself painted other ladies (and creatures) in Hollywood. She was born in El Paso and grew up in California where her father worked on San Simeon (the Hearst Castle). She became an actress and make-up artist and was best known for creating the “Creature From the Black Lagoon” … artist Tino Ortega used an iconic photo of Ms. Patrick for the mural.

I went on what I thought would be a little ride to see a couple painted ladies I read about online in Denver. Ended up seeing so many multi-colored, detailed Queen Anne & Victorian homes that I have an entire album of Painted Ladies now
. Never noticed until today.
This one definitely had the most pop & brightest colors though. Very happy I rode the extra time & distance to find it. I hope you enjoy too!

There are so many painted ladies in Old Town. I took a dozen photos and chose the narrowest house in America and two other buildings adjacent to it to post here.
Wife: Are you going for a ride this late?
Me: Yes, I need to find some painted ladies.
Wife: What?
Me: Scavhunt.
Wife: What?
Me: (silence)

I love all the color. But I live in Reston where color must be earth toned and generally boring.
