Freezing Saddles 2022 Scavenger Hunt Bonus Day!

FS2022 is drawing to a close, and there is conveniently one day that does not fall within a weekly theme, so we’re making it bonus day! As with the rest of the competition, there are two options – the daily participation prize, and the “beauty” prize. But note – your ONE submission on this day will only count for ONE of the two options.

What does this mean? It means that you must tell us in your forum post for 19 March WHICH option you are going for. We will only consider you for ONE option. You should include in your forum post either:
• March 19: Daily Participation Prize; or
• March 19: Beauty Prize

Good news: You will have until the end of 20 MARCH to submit your final photo in the forum.

Now, for the details.

If you want to compete for the daily participation prize bonus, you will earn a point for EACH item from the following list in ONE photograph:

• Oblate Spheroid
• Flowering Tree
• Wine
• Crosswalk
• St. Patrick’s Day
• Moon
• Embassy
• Chemistry
• Indigo
• Independent Bakery
• Art Deco Architecture
• Bicycle

For instance, if you find an Irish shamrock (I’m going to warn you now that we will not tolerate 4-leaf clovers for St. Patrick’s Day) in front of the Embassy of Sweden, and both your bicycle and a crosswalk are in the picture as well, you earn 4 points.

This means that you have the potential for 12 bonus points in the daily participation contest if you choose this option.

One item cannot count for two items on the list (an indigo oblate spheroid only counts for one item, for example). And of course you cannot submit items that you bring with you on your bike ride (we will make an exception for your own bicycle, but nothing else).

I recommend telling us which items you have in your photo. Make it obvious.

Everyone who chooses to submit a photo for the daily participation competition will receive points for their submission.
Don’t forget that you must include “#scavhunt” in your Strava title.

If you want to compete for bonus points in the “beauty” prize, you simply must submit:
The most beautiful, cool, striking, artsy-fartsy photograph of a bicycle EVER conceived by man – according to our anonymous panel of judges.
Prize: 5 points.
Only ONE person who competes for this option will receive the bonus points.

IMPORTANT: Don’t forget to tell us which option you are submitting for and may the canniest seeker win.

I found a lot. I think Rumi & Millie started us out with the style most commonly found here so we’d think this week would be easy…. This one was on Lorcum lane in Arlington

Identifiable features of Georgian architecture are symmetrical forms and stone or brick walls.

3-12 Georgian Architecture

This is not common in Colorado, so it added some Mike’s to my Saturday ride to get to an area where (thankfully) I found some two story, brick homes with symmetry (note the 2 chimneys even).

Unfortunately, brutalist will be another “fun” one around here :)

This is a non-starter in El Paso Texas but we have some really bad-ass murals and an amazing Indigenous/Mexican-American art community. (Note: I did NOT bike to this location but I figure if I’m posting something that doesn’t qualify as Georgian architecture, I might as well fail on all levels and share some of the culture at the same time!)

3/13/2022 Brutalist
Given that every one of DC’s Metro stations is an example of Brutalist architecture, this one could have been easy. So I decided to up the challenge by going to Georgetown University’s Joseph Mark Lauinger Library, 3700 O St NW, Washington, D.C. 20057-1174.

St. Luke Catholic Church (McLean, VA) has been described as “white brick, softly brutalist style”. The stained glass is not leaded, but cast in concrete.

Brutalism was generally characterized by its rough, unfinished surfaces, unusual shapes, heavy-looking materials, straight lines, and small windows.
