    Sticker on a gasoline pump.
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) maintains a metrology laboratory that is the source of traceability to national weights and measurement standards.

The Zero Milestone, located on the Ellipse in front of the White House, is a zero mile marker monument intended as the initial milestone from which all road distances in the United States should be measured when it was built.

How come I never noticed that?
I’m excited to check that out and also do a fossil bike tour of DC with the resources posted from yesterday!

I wonder how accurate these measurements are and if anyone was tempted to add a kilometers conversion.

Metrology, hmmm. I did a Google search and naturally NIST came up first — not nearby and I was spending the afternoon with my daughter in Manassas. Then I searched “metrology” on Google Maps and low and behold, “Nikon Metrology Inc” on Innovation Drive in Manassas came up, a mere 20 minute bike ride from my daughter’s house. Easy peasy, full day in Manassas — ride in the morning, and visit with my daughter in the afternoon. Rather annoyingly when I rode into the industrial complex on Innovation Dr, the sign for the business simply says “Nikon” — but a screen shot of Google Maps of Nikon Metrology’s location in my Strava from today shows the full name at that location.

2/20/2022 Metrology; i too did research and learned that the standards of measurement were changed in 2019. Among the changes were making Kelvin the standard unit of measurement of temperature. Freezing is 273K and water boils at 373K. So, 38 degrees Fahrenheit is an unrecognized unit of measurement. So doing the conversion:
    (38°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15 = 276.483K

Another fun fact is the kilogram is no longer based on a physical measure. Weight is based on Planck’s constant.e39e895f471e9d06cba2ac8ffad3f569.jpg

This map shows how the Arlington loop is 16 miles around.

Maybe a mile marker wouldabin better but I really find maps do much more helpful. It woulda worked better for metrology if the distances were marked for the different legs of the loop.

Metrology is the scientific study of measurement. None of the art objects would have happened if artists hadn’t taken measurements.

This guy was stopped for speeding based on a device developed with metrology — in this case, measuring speed.

A true metrologist would, of course, be appalled at the false precision.

That’s the one I was thinking of doing. Maybe with either a speed camera or one of those current speed signs. Cool!

Once again I forgot to post!

I saw these guys near 3rd & F NW, next to the Holy Rosary Church at the Casa Italiana. I figured at least one of these well-known men might have done some measuring. One was a composer, architect, politician, but “Guglielmo Giovanni Maria Marconi, 1st Marquis of Marconi FRSA was an Italian inventor and electrical engineer, known for his creation of a practical radio wave-based wireless telegraph system”. I don’t think you can get much more measurement-oriented than that!

I was actually heading to a speed camera when I saw this ahead of me. But a) I was as usual cutting it close to post both this and a Little Free Library before midnight, so having this along the route was serendipitous, and b) I figured the live version was more dramatic than the robot version. (Of course, I did have a moment of wondering just how sensitive a Montgomery County police officer would be to being photographed, but I always did live dangerously!) I did eventually get a photo of a speed camera as well, and it will be in my Strava ride.
