ParticipantPath Less Pedaled is an online community built around bikepacking and touring, gravel biking, and ways to enjoy cycling in a noncompetitive world. Russ hosts a YouTube channel where he reviews touring bikes and gear, tells stories about both epic and not-so-challenging-but-amazing rides, and explores unconventional component variations in the Cave of Bad Ideas. He also showcases some of his drawings and even fly fishing adventures — all done by bike. His partner Laura works for Adventure Cycling Association. They live in Montana.

There’s hours and hours of entertainment on the YT channel, but also….
This morning Russ held his first ever virtual Coffee Outside meetup, via Zoom. I attended with about 20 others from places far and wide. Some of the conversation was about how to lighten up the pandemic shutdown by connecting bikey people online. Russ is mulling over ideas on how to structure Zoom sessions around more focused topics and guest speakers, so it can be informative, fun, and typically casual.
If you’d be interested in joining future virtual Coffee Outside gatherings, subscribe to the channel or get on the PLP email list.
Side note: I recently bought one of the watercolors created in Saguaro National Park East, where they rode the same loop we drove on our visit to Arizona last November. Cactus are awesome . Here’s the video of their ride: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYxTxsx0d_Y

ParticipantThanks for this post. I like Russ and his channel, bingeing when work is slow. I wish I knew about that Zoom session, I might’ve joined

Absolutely! He had just created a Zoom account, and floated today’s meetup as a trial balloon to see how it would go and what kind of interest he’d get. I only received the invite last night. Based on a great conversation, there will definitely be more to come; I’ll try to spread the word. It was really fun talking to them in person.
Yeah, lots of great content to fill time, and keep on in the background while teleworking

ParticipantThis reminds me that I want to do a Coffee Outside down on the Anacostia when all this craziness is over.

ParticipantPath Less Pedaled hosted a livestream last night, titled “Bikes and Bourbon.” Russ invited some guests (GravelStoke, Bearclaw Bicycles, Spindatt, Angus and Jude Gerace) to a Zoom meeting, then livestreamed the conversation via YouTube where more casual observers could participate by asking questions in the comments. Lots of cool discussion about gravel bike technology, from small US businesses doing great work. While sipping the good stuff in front of a fireplace or on the front porch.
I missed the whole thing, but the recording is on the YouTube channel here:
https://youtu.be/NfFkQdbUy0sA great question was asked: “Biking is such a social activity, and so many bike shops hang their hat on being a community resource. What do you do now that you can’t congregate?” Watch to see how people are building community around bikes today.
There’s another livestream coming up this week, Thursday April 2nd at 3:15 (Eastern). The topic is tire pressure, going down the rabbit hole and challenging notions about the right amount of air to support a comfortable ride (“Your tires are lying to you”). Guest Josh Poertner from Silca.

ParticipantDown the rabbit hole….. A couple tidbits from today’s livestream with Josh Poertner, tire nerd extraordinaire. Josh serves pro athletes and teams and spends a lot of time deflating their tires

The reply I received: “Most of their data points are from the World Tour road teams. For wider tires maybe try to find a resource from the mtb world.”

Ha, are you kidding Consular? As a fellow fat biker, we know that there are three pressures:
1. Draggy
2. Bouncy
3. Just rightThat last one is a window of .5psi at any point
Not sure if you know who Mike Curiak is, but he wote up how he was running below 2 psi (but maybe more than 1 psi) on 5″ wide tires
He’s a great bike adventurer, photographer, and writer: https://lacemine29.blogspot.com/2019/02/testing-one-two-three.html

ParticipantNew sessions are being queued up with more guests.
Next one is this Thursday, April 9th at 3:00 PM. It’s an interview with Igor from Velo-Orange, talking about the challenges of a small bike brand and making an exciting new annoucement. Patreon supporters get to join the Zoom meeting directly. As a casual attendee, you can watch on YouTube and interact in the comments section.

Try it yourself: https://info.silca.cc/silca-professional-pressure-calculatorInteresting! Recommended tire pressures are well below what Schwalbe recommends! Very close to what I ran at the Garage Races on that polished concrete. Disclosure- I run Schwalbe Marathons on both the Trek 412 and Das Kettler. Don’t know how that fat anti-puncture layer affects their stability, though when I ran Conti PLUS tires on the Trek, they were *extremely unhappy* at even slightly reduced pressures.

ParticipantAlways like a good VO release. Will it be their new front rack? Or a final version of their redesigned Passhunter frameset?

Exactly!
The “recommended” tire pressure printed on the sidewall of every tire is actually something else.
Watch Your TIRES are LYING to YOU! for the truth about what those numbers mean (the real info starts at about 1:30) and you’ll never strain your eyesight looking for them again.
TLDR: The numbers on the sidewall are a legal requirement based on standards testing, not a recommendation based on performance or comfort. People often assume inflating tires at the upper end of that range will make them faster. But as it bears out, deflating your tires to the point they are giving you a smooth ride will actually increase your performance.
To dial in the pressure that works for you, on your bike, with your chosen tires, on the terrain you like to ride, takes a little research. “Seek smoothness.”

He kinda gave it away at the end of the last livestream. But I’m not sayin’ 😎
VO is a local builder making quality stuff, I’m a fan too.
