Since the Revolution Hub (which was my go-to for emergency tubes, lights, and last minute Honey Stinger waffles) closed here in Crystal City, I think we could really use one of these.

Rumor is that Phoenix Bikes/Crystal City BID are thinking about something like this

I saw those when we were scoping out the Twin Cities and was seriously impressed with what all you could get from those machines. I, too, mourn the passing of the Revolution City Hub shop.

What’s you opinion on the bike friendliness of the twin cities? Minneapolis seems to get very high marks.

Hands down the most cycling friendly city in the US. Portland might be getting all of the love from the press, cool kids, and list makers but the Twin Cities put it to shame in terms of bike friendliness, bike culture, and cycling support. When it snows there one of the first the cities do is have the Greenway plowed so it can be used safely, often before they start plowing the regular streets. You really have to be dedicated to ride when it’s 10 below zero with 25 mph winds (-37 degrees with wind chill) and snowing but the Twin Cities transit folks make sure the Greenway is cleared for you if you feel up to it.

The one I saw had little tool kits, spare tubes in different 700cc sizes, PowerBars/Stinger waffles, rain ponchos, small lights.

Assuming it’s not a rumor, what would you want it stocked with?

It was supposed to be installed by Bike to Work Week, but there was a delay from the manufacturer. Should be coming to the Crystal City Water Park soon.

An assortment of fitted and ready to ride TdF bikes, and a money slot that takes $1,000 bills.

No seriously…. tubes, patch kits, food bits, tire levers, blinkies maybe.

Blinkies/small lights, tubes, little tool kits, energy bars, little first aid kits (Hello Kitty bandaids of course), patch kits…

Here’s what all was in the one I saw in Uptown:

    – 700c, 26-inch, and 20-inch inner tubes
    – Patch kits
    – Rim tape
    – U locks
    – Trail maps
    – Front and tail lights
    – Water bottles
    – Snacks
    – Drinks
    – Action Wipes
    – Sunscreen (summer)
    – Hand warmers (winter)

They also have an electric bike pump and work stand at the machine along with a tube recycling box. The one we saw took all credit cards and had pretty fair prices.

I’m a little bemused by rim tape but would add:

    16G threaded CO2
    CO2 threaded Pump heads (cheapies)
    Cheap Hand pump (dual presta/Schreder)
    Sidewall patch
    Lever/patch kit
    AA/AAA batteries (for lights)
Small lube bottles (PTFE and Petro)
    Basic multitool
    Presta/Schrader adaptor
    Chamois butter…
    Advil…
