We saw so many of these last year when we weren’t looking. So we decided to host a prize for those who ARE looking and who follow.the.rules.

    So here are the rules:

    Little Free Library (LFL) Prize

    • One per day. You can stop and start your strava all you want, but you will still get credit for only one LFL per day.
    • One photo in your post. Multiple photos will result in zero points for that day, no matter how engaging or clever or beautiful the LFL is.
    • Some part of your bike must be visible in photo
    • Cannot repeat a location – so if you see more than one while you’re out riding, you might want to come back to it the next day with an item to add to the library to get the extra point!
    • Extra point for
    • Exact coordinates of location (+1) (Address or GPS)
    • Depositing a library item OR
    • Noting what genre of book the rider thinks the LFL needs restocked (+1 for b or c)
    • Prize will be for rider with most points.
    • In case of tie winner will be determined by lowest mileage total
    • For particularly ornate or interestingly constructed LFL’s, the faceless cabal will consider extra points.
    • EXTRA EXTRA POINTS – If you comment in this forum on someone else’s find in a way that is encouraging and positive (and unique or interesting), the faceless cabal will consider adding +5 points. To ensure this gets counted, use the Reply With Quote function.
    • Prize will be a significant gift card to local (not chain) bookstore. Winner may select bookstore (new or used) convenient to winner’s location, but it cannot be a chain.
    • Use this hashtag but don’t count on it being the definitive “who wins” counter: #FSBOOKS

Example of perfect entry (add photo):

Photo of Bike in front of LFL
    Coordinates:
I left this book at the library: To Kill a Mockingbird
    OR
This library needs more: picture books

To help you get started, here is a link to a map with the registered little free libraries. NOTE: There are many LFL’s in our area that are not on this map. You will see them if you ride slowly and keep your eyes open. They occur in the most unexpected places, so have fun with this!

    In case anyone is interested:

Feeding Saddles – the fundraiser that allows us to say thank you for our health and ability to bike and also feeds our DMV community members who need a bit of extra help.

    https://give.capitalareafoodbank.org/feeding-saddles-2022

I think of this donation each year as what I would happily pay if Freezing Saddles charged for participation. It’s so much fun and costs us nothing. I’d venture to say that most of us have nice bikes, go home to warm places to live, and do not suffer food shortage. It’s an easy way to give back. Thank you Rumi for organizing this opportunity to give $$ to feed people in our region.

I know some of the LFL players have already donated and THANK YOU for that. If you can help, please do. It’s a chance to say thank you for those who put on Freezing Saddles and thank you to the universe that we have the ability to ride and play and not endure unrequited hunger.

When I spotted this home in the distance I was hoping it would have a LFL to accompany the St. Patrick’s day decor. Alas it did not, and sadly I wasn’t able to ride before 10pm so no kid today either (she got her riding done in the morning!).

Left Stephen King’s “Hearts in Atlantis” at this LFL at 5006 Newport Avenue in Bethesda. A sign on the door says it specializes in books by POC, especially Black authors. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any of those with me, but I pass this along for the next person who might go there.

KidSnowLeopard and I happened upon a few LFLs that were new to us today. Somehow I missed getting both our bikes in the photo, but hers shows up on Strava. She was excited that this one had “Mr. Lemoncello’s Library,” which she borrowed for a reread. 3000ish block of Monroe St NE DC

We didn’t carry a book to drop off with us today, but I know we’ll keep going through Spring and Summer, dropping off books we’ve enjoyed and borrowing new ones.
