We saw so many of these last year when we weren’t looking. So we decided to host a prize for those who ARE looking and who follow.the.rules.

    So here are the rules:

    Little Free Library (LFL) Prize

    • One per day. You can stop and start your strava all you want, but you will still get credit for only one LFL per day.
    • One photo in your post. Multiple photos will result in zero points for that day, no matter how engaging or clever or beautiful the LFL is.
    • Some part of your bike must be visible in photo
    • Cannot repeat a location – so if you see more than one while you’re out riding, you might want to come back to it the next day with an item to add to the library to get the extra point!
    • Extra point for
    • Exact coordinates of location (+1) (Address or GPS)
    • Depositing a library item OR
    • Noting what genre of book the rider thinks the LFL needs restocked (+1 for b or c)
    • Prize will be for rider with most points.
    • In case of tie winner will be determined by lowest mileage total
    • For particularly ornate or interestingly constructed LFL’s, the faceless cabal will consider extra points.
    • EXTRA EXTRA POINTS – If you comment in this forum on someone else’s find in a way that is encouraging and positive (and unique or interesting), the faceless cabal will consider adding +5 points. To ensure this gets counted, use the Reply With Quote function.
    • Prize will be a significant gift card to local (not chain) bookstore. Winner may select bookstore (new or used) convenient to winner’s location, but it cannot be a chain.
    • Use this hashtag but don’t count on it being the definitive “who wins” counter: #FSBOOKS

Example of perfect entry (add photo):

Photo of Bike in front of LFL
    Coordinates:
I left this book at the library: To Kill a Mockingbird
    OR
This library needs more: picture books

To help you get started, here is a link to a map with the registered little free libraries. NOTE: There are many LFL’s in our area that are not on this map. You will see them if you ride slowly and keep your eyes open. They occur in the most unexpected places, so have fun with this!

This friendly little library is located at Long Branch Elementary school in Arlington, on N. Filmore between N. 1st and Arlington Blvd.
it is exclusively filled with books for kids…Appropriate given the location. I found one of my favorite children’s books inside, “Poppy” by Avi. (I was just telling someone about this book today!)f1504bc87e48503d49cfc9062ecf97d3.jpg

Little Free Library in the 1600 block of Jackson St. NE that I might never have passed had I not been trying to get away from the Amazon delivery driver yelling for me to hurry up and cross the street. I had the right of way to continue in the flow of traffic but was going extra cautiously in front of them because they completely sped through the stop sign and I wasn’t confident that they would actually stop.

I almost never use that block because it’s a steep up and down hill, but today got rewarded with three little Free Library holding the Golden Compass sword that I had wanted to reread.

This fairly small LFL had a half dozen children’s books and several magazines, including “Elle Decor” which looked like it might have some ideas for a bathroom remodel. I deposited “Amazing Rescues” by George Shea (a childhood favorite of my son’s) in exchange for the issue of “Elle Decor.”

It’s near the Y, so it could use more books on fitness.

1/13/22 LFL in Fairlington Mews by pool and playground. Sadly a mess with books shoved in to the brim. No kids books, which is a shame in this location.50adccfbef8de2cdd14e78c98092421f.jpg

This one is a multistory combined Little Free Library and Neighborhood Food Share in a park on Spring Street at the corner of Fairview in Silver Spring. To be honest, what it could mostly use is food; there was none in it. The separate structure to the right in my photo, which was apparently intended to hold food, had only a baby seat in it. However, as to books, it is right by a playground, it could use more children’s books.

I think I saw you taking this photo yesterday – I was coming back from getting my ‘boulder’ pic off the Fillmore trail and I flew by a biker at night next to the LFL in front of Long Brance Elementary, and I though to myself: Oh, I should have yelled out “FREEZING SADDLES” – but of course, I didn’t think about that until after the fact. I got a pic of this particular one a few days ago.

This LFL was chock full of a variety of books with only a little space to add more. Today I didn’t bring any children’s books which is unfortunate as this LFL didn’t have any. Fortunately, however, I had “Dealing with Difficult People” by Christina Osborne, a very slim little book, which I deposited, and took one of the bulkier novels, “Little Earthquakes” by NYT best-selling author Jennifer Weiner.

How cute! I might have to make the trek from Reston into DC to find this LFL!
